The reigning NFL MVP didn’t miss a beat when he hit the field in the first preseason game

The Kansas City Chiefs offense set the tone early in their first preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals with three straight passing plays — and answered the Bengals’ opening drive touchdown.

On the very first play of the first drive, Patrick Mahomes connected with tight end Travis Kelce for a 36-yard completion. Mahomes’ throw was right on the money.

Mahomes then completed a pass to Sammy Watkins for seven yards, and then came a 23-yard catch and run by tight end Blake Bell.

After getting to the goal line by coaxing the Bengals defense offsides — and a 10-yard scramble by Mahomes — Carlos Hyde punched it in with a 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game 7-7 with 4:01 left in the first quarter.

The drive went for 83 yards and took seven plays, taking just 3:47 off the clock.

But since the Bengals had chewed up more than seven minutes on their opening touchdown drive, there wasn’t enough time left in the first quarter for the fans to see more from the reigning NFL MVP. That was it for Mahomes and most of the first-team offensive players.

Mahomes left the game with a a perfect stat line: 4/4 for 66 yards.
