The Redskins took on the Bengals at home Thursday night and while the game was filled with a ton of penalties early on, there were some bright spots by the first team offense and defense.
Below are my studs and duds of the game.
Studs:
Adrian Peterson - AP only got 4 carries, but his first carry of the evening, a 26 yard scamper off the left side, which featured his patented jump-cut, showcased the special talent he is. The 34 year old back looks as fast as he ever was, and the lateral agility is second to none.
Ereck Flowers - Flowers was VERY good on the evening at left guard, even when the players to his left and right were not. He looked good in the run game, showing good movement on his pulling, and generating a push up front, and believe it or not, looked stellar in pass pro, both against the Bengals starters and reserves. Could guard be his spot for the future?
Jonathan Allen/Daron Payne - The dynamic duo didn’t get to play a ton of snaps, but they certainly made their presence felt when they were on the field. Allen was his usual disruptive self on interior plays and chasing down screens to the outside, and Payne was a rock inside, as well as getting the tipped pass that Nicholson returned for the score.
Josh Harvey-Clemons - JHC finally looks the part of an inside linebacker, and on Thursday night, he played the part too. He was all over the field making plays, and was solid on pass coverage and open-field tackles. It looks like the game has slowed down significantly for him, and now he can just go out and play fast.
Montae Nicholson - Nicholson did get called for a questionable “lowering the head” penalty, but the third year safety looked in control when he was on the field. He made an interception down by the goalline on a tipped pass, and took it to the house. There is no doubt this young man has the speed!
Landon Collins - Collins didn’t get a ton of burn during the game, but he made his presence felt when he was on the field. Early in the game, he came up to make two impact tackles and showed good coverage in a pass to the endzone.
Duds:
Geron Christian Sr.- The second year left tackle did not fair well against the Bengals starters or reserves Thursday night. He struggled against both speed and power, and looked pretty much over-matched all evening.
Josh Norman - Look, I get that the penalty called on Norman was complete BS, but you’ve got to keep your composure. The second penalty cost his team even more. Aside from that, he whiffed on an open-field tackle early on. If you’re going to talk the talk, you better walk the walk, and on Thursday night, Norman did not.
Tony Bergstrom - I thought Bergstrom’s job may be safe when we entered camp, as he gives the Redskins a veteran presence who can play both center and guard, but after watching the first two preseason games, it’s pretty clear his job is ANYTHING but safe. He looked awful again Thursday, this time against the Bengals reserves.
Dustin Hopkins - Hopkins had a case of the yips Thursday night missing a field goal and an extra point in ugly fashion. It’s best he get this out of his system before the season starts.
Redskins Special Teams - This is the second game in a row the Redskins have given up a return TD. Not good!
The Refs - Horrible job!
