Social media highlights of Cowboys practice: Defense continues to create turnovers

Taking the football away is key for the defenses success in 2019.

After an offensive win in Tuesday’s practice, the defense really came out to play as the team looks ahead to Hawaii for this weekend’s preseason game. The defense flew around all practice when rushing the passer, playing the run, and making plays in coverage against the pass. If this year’s training camp is any indication of what’s ahead for the Cowboys turnover numbers in 2019, then we should all take the over.

The highlight(s) of Wednesday’s practice came on back-to-back plays as the first-team offense went up against the first-team defense. Chidobe Awuzie and Xavier Woods made back-to-back interceptions. Woods’, unfortunately, was nullified due to an offsides, but the instincts and range he showed off on the play was impressive:

The offense got lucky on this one, but their luck ran out on the very next play. Either Michael Gallup and Dak Prescott were not on the same page, or this is just a terrible pass from Prescott. Either way, Awuzie stays in great position to come away with the pick. You can see it here:

Rookie Ricky Walker, out of Virginia Tech, has started to make some noise the last few practices and in the Cowboys’ first preseason game. Walker is an intriguing down-the-roster option at defensive tackle, and has an opportunity to land of the 53-man roster if he can finish the offseason out strong:

Dak Prescott and Michael Gallup’s connection has been on-point so far this offseason. If there’s a player on this offense that is primed for a huge leap in year two, it’s 100% Michael Gallup:

Along with Michael Gallup, second-year pass rusher Dorance Armstrong has had himself a strong training camp as well. Armstrong has had success rushing against the best of the best, and the worst of the worst. Armstrong looks to have re-built his body over the offseason and is ready to take on a larger role in 2019. He recorded a strip-sack in practice today working against La’el Collins:

Former second-round pick Devin Smith is making a strong push for more opportunities, and potentially a roster spot. Smith showed in the Cowboys preseason game that he could create some separation using his speed. The former highly-touted receiver out of Ohio State made a couple of really nice catches today on some balls he had to showcase his body control and athleticism:

We had a little scuffle at the tail end of practice between Taco Charlton and Cam Fleming. This time of year, these things tend to happen with veterans getting bored with practice, and ready for the real deal to start. As always, Charlton and Fleming were fine after the team broke it up:

Last but not least, Cowboys fans can take a deep breath. In his second straight practice, Brett Maher was perfect on his field goal attempts. Maher went 6-6 again today with long of 48. The kicker position is one of the big questions that still needs answering, but Brett Maher may be getting into a groove if his last two practices are any indication of what’s to come. We’ll see if he can carry that into Hawaii:
