Who stood out in Wednesday’s afternoon practice?
We’re starting to see a trend coming out of Oxnard over the last few practices. If you aren’t familiar with second-year pass rusher Dorance Armstrong, you better do yourself a favor and get interested. Another afternoon practice, another great showing from the 6-foot-4 pass rusher out of Kansas. Armstrong had an okay rookie season last year working as a rotational pass rusher in certain downs-and-distances. From the sights and sounds of camp, he is looking to play a much bigger role in 2019.
Armstrong stole the show in Wednesday’s practice showcasing an array of pass rush moves against some of the starting offensive lineman. Armstrong pulled a new trick out of the hat today when he pulled off an impressive fake-spin move that completely fooled La’el Collins in one-on-one’s.

Armstrong wasn’t the only second-year player to impress in Wednesday’s practice as wide receiver Cedrick Wilson is slowly, but surely, starting the make his presence known in Oxnard. Wilson started off camp slow, but over the last few practices has really impressed his coaches, most importantly Sanjay Lal who has reportedly given a ton of praise to Wilson in these last few practices. Wilson, while not being the fastest, tallest, or most athletic guy on the field, has a great feel for how to get open and ways to create separation at the top of his routes. Wilson is currently battling for the sixth and final receiving spot on the depth chart, and has some tough competition ahead of him.
A couple of rookies, Joe Jackson and Jon’Vea Johnson, are continuing to have quality practices in Oxnard. Neither player has locked down a roster spot, so they will need to continue to impress throughout the remainder of training camp and preseason games. With Lance Lenoir being released, Noah Brown not practicing due to injury, and the veterans getting scheduled days off, Johnson will have plenty opportunities ahead to earn the star. Same goes for Joe Jackson, a rookie out of the University of Miami, who is seeing the field plenty with DeMarcus Lawrence, Tyrone Crawford, Robert Quinn, and Randy Gregory not participating in camp. Jackson has more of an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster due to all the bodies and talent along the defensive line, but if he continues to play the way he has, he will leave the Cowboys with no choice but to keep him around.
