Vikings inform Kevin McDermott he’s being released

NFL: Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears Patrick Gorski-USA TODAY Sports

They’ll be going with Austin Cutting

While the Minnesota Vikings created some questions on their special teams units with their trade to acquire Baltimore Ravens’ kicker Kaare Vedvik, it appears that they’ve found the answer they were looking for to another special teams issue.

Close, Personal Friend of The Daily Norseman Tom Pelissero™ is reporting that the Vikings have informed incumbent long snapper Kevin McDermott that the team is going to release him. This gives the job to their seventh-round pick, Austin Cutting.

McDermott had been the long snapper for the Vikings since 2015, and famously lost a piece of one of his fingers in last year’s contest against the Los Angeles Rams. That did get him a “Toughness” rating of 96 in this year’s version of Madden NFL. Unfortunately for him, it is not going to be enough to secure his roster spot with the Vikings.

This doesn’t come as a huge surprise. The writing was pretty much on the wall for McDermott when the Vikings used a draft choice on Cutting this past April. This will give him plenty of time to, hopefully, latch on with another team that’s looking for an upgrade at the long snapper spot.
