Colts defensive end Jabaal Sheard will not be placed on injured reserve

NFL: AFC Wild Card-Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Defensive end Jabaal Sheard will not be placed on injured reserve to start the season.

Indianapolis Colts defensive end Jabaal Sheard has spent this preseason rehabilitating from knee surgery. In July, head coach Frank Reich stated that there was uncertainty with how much time Sheard would miss: “(I) don’t know exactly how much time (he’ll miss).” Reich told reporters in training camp.

Some expected that the 30 year-old would be placed on injured reserve with a return designation. Fortunately for the team, general manager Chris Ballard has confirmed this will not be the case.

While it’s unclear when he will return, some are speculating that it will be sooner rather than later. It simply does not make sense to keep Sheard on the active roster if he was expected to miss close to eight games. (Injured reserve with return designation allows teams to bring a player back after eight games)

For now, the Colts will rely on their young defensive line to fill the void until Sheard returns to the team.
