A first time stud and a first dud time this season.
Are we even surprised that Deshaun Watson and that Texans offense diced Atlanta’s very vanilla defense up? The Falcons are reeling, falling to 1-4 on the season, including an 0-3 mark against the AFC South.
The offense played well, which is good for fantasy purposes, but not even the 2016 Falcons offense would’ve been able to keep up with a Texans team which scored at will all afternoon. The pain is being replaced by numbness at this point, as this seems destined to be another lost season.

This article will look at things strictly from a fantasy football perspective (that means looking at nothing other than purely statistics). Here is Atlanta’s fantasy stud and fantasy dud from Week 5’s defeat against the Houston Texans.

Fantasy Stud - Matt Ryan
Stat Line - 330 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns, 1 interception, 3 carries, 7 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown: 31.90 standard league/PPR points
Matt Ryan had himself a wonderful afternoon as far as the stat sheet is concerned. With Houston scoring so much, and the run game not effective at all, it was up to Ryan to carry Atlanta’s offense on his back and he did an admirable job of it.
Ryan’s four total touchdowns represents a season high. He did a masterful job of distributing the ball to a variety of weapons — eight different Falcons had a reception, nobody caught more than six passes, and six different players tallied at least 40 receiving yards. The Boston College alum also recorded his first rushing touchdown of the year.
The turnovers aren’t pretty — Ryan has had at least one turnover in each game — but interceptions and fumbles aren’t weighed as heavily as touchdowns in fantasy football, so they’re easy to overlook for fantasy owners as long as he keeps scoring.
Ryan has recorded at least 300 yards in every game this season, having to stage comebacks every single week. It’s a good bet that that streak will continue for as long as Dan Quinn is calling defensive plays in Atlanta. Ryan is a very good fantasy option.
Dud
Julio Jones - 3 catches, 42 receiving yards - 4.2 standard league points, 7.2 PPR points
While Ryan threw for 330 yards, Julio only accounted for 42 of those yards. Jones played his part to the big offensive afternoon, attracting extra attention and making things easier for his fellow pass catchers, but that didn’t help fantasy owners.
The Alabama alum was just fourth on the team in receiving yards, and sixth in receptions.
This is just one of those dud games that you’ll get from Jones in addition to his monster weeks. That’s been his MO for years, and fantasy players knew what they were getting when they spent a premium draft pick on him.
While Julio has struggled the past two weeks — totaling 94 receiving yards combined — I wouldn’t be too worried about him moving forward. Whenever he’s due a monster game, he normally delivers.
