The Los Angeles Chargers have signed multiple players to futures contracts today. Those players include cornerback Tevaughn Campbell, linebacker Malik Jefferson, tight end Stephen Anderson, wide receiver Tyron Johnson, defensive back Quenton Meeks, defensive tackle P.J. Johnson, offensive tackle Tyree St. Louis, and center Cole Toner
Campbell and Anderson both spent time on both the practice squad and active roster for the Chargers this season. While both Johnsons, Jefferson, Meeks, St. Louis, and Toner were all members of the practice squad
Many of the players signed to these sort of contracts will not see playing time in the following season, but almost inevitably some will. Notably, both Andre Patton and Ty Long played sizable roles for the 2019 Chargers after being on futures deals in early January.
It is also not unusual to see the same players repeat the process multiple times even with the same team. Toner, for instance, was on a future contract back in 2018 as well.
Ultimately, these are unlikely to be moves that make an impact, but it’s possible we are looking at one or two players who could get onto the field in 2020.
