Williams can return to practice and now has three weeks for the Chiefs to activate him.
The Kansas City Chiefs have designated defensive tackle Xavier Williams to return from injured reserve, according to the NFL’s transactions report.
Williams was placed on injured reserve with a high-ankle sprain on Wednesday, October 9, three days after the Chiefs’ Week 5 game with the Indianapolis Colts.
Each NFL team is allowed to designate two players to return each season. Since the Chiefs already went through the same process with quarterback Chad Henne, who eventually returned to the 53-man roster, Williams is the final Kansas City player eligible to return this year.
Significant injury news here given his diagnosis of high ankle sprain. Even if he had a procedure (wh/ we don’t know) he is in approx range to RTP. Credit to Med personnel and player for getting him to this point to be eligible to return.@ArrowheadPride https://t.co/9BFBGlwdsJ

Williams’ designation starts a 21-day clock (ending on December 25), during which the Chiefs can activate Williams or he will finish the season on injured reserve. Williams had been rotating in for nearly 50% of the Chiefs’ defensive snaps during the two games prior to suffering his injury, so there is a decent chance Kansas City chooses to bring him back ahead of the playoffs.
It is also reasonable to think Williams, who Steve Spagnuolo had been high on during training camp, could mix in with the likes of Khalen Saunders, Derrick Nnadi and Mike Pennel.
The 27-year-old Grandview native currently has eight tackles (seven solo) on the season.
