Monday Night Football, Week 13. Tonight the Philadelphia Eagles host the New York Giants in an NFC East grudge match.
The Giants come into this game in free fall, one of the worst teams in the NFL. They have lost eight straight games. Their defense has allowed 27 or more points in 10 out of 12 contests, and their offense has scored more than 27 points in only one game all year. Thus the 2-10 record. The main point of interest in this game for the Giants is the return of Eli Manning to the starting lineup. After a long career as the Giants’ unquestioned starter, Eli was unceremoniously dumped in favor of rookie quarterback Daniel Jones in the third game of this season. Jones, after winning his first two starts, proceeded to lose eight straight. Now Jones is out with an injured ankle, and Eli gets one final chance at the helm before likely riding off into the sunset at the end of this year. It will be interesting to see if the Giants rally around their old warhorse Eli.
The Philadelphia Eagles come into this game losers of three straight and five of seven. This Eagles team is difficult to figure out. They have crushed the Buffalo Bills and also count wins against tough teams like the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears on their 2019 ledger. On the other hand, the Eagles have lost to the likes of the Miami Dolphins, the Detroit Lions and the Atlanta Falcons. Go figure. In any other division the Eagles would be toast with their 5-7 record. However, in the dreadful NFC East the Eagles are just a win tonight against the Giants away from being in a tie for first place in the division. Given how the Eagles have fared against the dregs of the NFL this year, though, I wouldn’t bet the house on them prospering tonight.
It’s the Eagles and the Giants in an NFC East rivalry game that somehow has major playoff implications, tonight on Monday Night Football.
Enjoy the game everybody.
