Tre’Davious White only Bills player named to Pro Bowl

Nine others were named as alternates.

The NFL unveiled their initial batch of Pro Bowl selections on Tuesday night, and Tre’Davious White, the Buffalo Bills’ best player, was named to the squad. The bad news is that White was the only outright representative from the 10-4 Buffalo Bills. The Baltimore Ravens led the league with a record 12 selections, while the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants were both shut out. Most teams had multiple players selected, but the Bills shared company with the Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, and the New York Jets in only landing a single representative.

On the bright side, nine different Bills were named as Pro Bowl alternates, per multiple Bills beat reporters. Tremaine Edmunds and Andre Roberts were both named First Alternates. Mitch Morse is a second alternate, Josh Allen is a third alternate. John Brown, Jerry Hughes, Jordan Phillips, and Frank Gore were named fourth alternates. Jordan Poyer was a fifth alternate.

No doubt, the entire Bills organization will use the fuel from their snubs to stoke the flames of the remaining 2019 season. Some of the decisions are outright indefensible:

• Geno Atkins (4.5 sacks) a starter and Phillips (9.5 sacks, second among DTs behind Aaron Donald) a fourth alternate.
• Jarvis Landry (74/1018/5 on 123 targets) a starter and John Brown (71/1007/5 on 111 targets) a fourth alternate.
• Jordan Poyer a fifth alternate.
• Micah Hyde not even listed.
• Frank Gore (rushing for the worst average of his career) named a “lifetime achievement” alternate without a nod to Devin Singletary (3rd-best rushing average among players with 100+ carries).

But, well, that’s the Pro Bowl in a nutshell. A head-scratching popularity contest that inexplicably ties into contract paperwork and Hall of Fame resumes. Cheers to White, who now strengthens his case for an All-Pro nod, and here’s looking forward to him skipping the festivities when the Bills are busy preparing for a Super Bowl.
