What to expect from the Cowboys’ passing attack

The QB Scho Show #45!

Every week on The QB Scho Show we take a look back at Carson Wentz’s previous week performance and look ahead to the upcoming enemy quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. This week is no different, but the stakes have been raised considerably.

The Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys are fighting for their playoff lives and the outcome will go a long way in coloring how we talk about the respective seasons of Carson Wentz and Dak Prescott.

Prescott enters the game as the 6th graded QB for Pro Football Focus with the 4th highest QBR and 7th ranked adjusted net yards per attempt. Instead of trying to reword Mark Schofield’s excellent piece on their passing game, here’s an idea of what the Eagles are going to have to deal with...

Studying the Cowboys’ offense, you can see up close how well Prescott has been playing. What you can also see is how new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has helped his quarterback with some QB-friendly designs.

One of the things that Moore does well is “layer” the offense, giving his quarterback an area of the field to read while stressing the defense down the field. Whether on designs (and their variations) such as sail, flood, Mills, levels or shallow cross. Moore gives his QB an area of the field to read while still challenging the defense, and then Prescott more than often carries through his part of the bargain.

But wait, there’s more! Schofield went “Inside the Playbook” to give a visual aid on how the Cowboys’ passing game works with Moore and Prescott.

Along with the air attack, the Eagles have to be wary of Prescott’s threat as a runner. Washington gashed the Eagles with designed runs and options for Dwayne Haskins and Prescott is ten times the athlete. Prescott is only averaging 3.4 carries per game, but with what Washington put on tape it will be hard for Moore to resist giving his quarterback more keeper and option designs.
