Browns hire Ryan Grigson as a consultant

2017 Cleveland Browns Training Camp

Grigson has close ties to Browns general manager Andrew Berry from their time together with the Colts.

The Cleveland Browns have reportedly hired former Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson as a consultant and advisor.

The move was first reported on Thursday by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:

Grigson has ties to Browns general manager Andrew Berry as the two have worked together twice in the past. The duo first teamed up with the Indianapolis Colts from 2012 to 2015 when Grigson was the general manager and Berry served as pro scouting coordinator. They also worked together in 2017 in Cleveland when Grigson was a senior personnel executive and Berry was vice president of player personnel.

He was fired when John Dorsey took over as general manager in 2017 and then spent the 2018 season working with the Seattle Seahawks as a senior football consultant.

While he is only serving as a consultant at the moment, Grigson may be in line for a full-time position with the Browns following the upcoming NFL Draft, according to cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot:

Grigson spent a decade as a scout, first with the then-St. Louis Rams starting in 2001, before moving on to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2003. While with the Eagles, Grigson advanced from a regional scout to director of college scouting before spending two seasons as director of player personnel.

He was hired by the Colts as general manager in 2012, selected quarterback Andrew Luck in the first round of the draft, and proceeded to build an Indianapolis team that went 11-5 for three consecutive seasons, made the playoffs each of those seasons, and made one AFC Championship Game appearance.

Things began to fall apart in 2015 as Luck only played seven games due to injuries, the Colts went 8-8 two season in a row, and Grigson was fired.

Along the way, Grigson failed to adequately protect Luck by building a solid offensive line, and was on the wrong end of the trade for running back Trent Richardson in 2013.

So while he is a longtime “football guy,” there has been some bad with the good when it comes to Grigson, just like every other NFL executive.
