Golden Nuggets: AJ Bouye could be available, should 49ers be interested?

As we inch closer to the NFL free agent signing period, more and more names are becoming available as teams work to improve their cap situations. Just yesterday the Chicago Bears released WR Taylor Gabriel and CB Prince Amukamara - both solid veterans - to clear space, and that could just be the tip of the iceberg.

But it’s another player whose name has been floated as a possible cap casualty that should interest the 49ers as they look to improve the roster this offseason:

AJ Bouye.

According to Jaguars.com senior writer John Oehser, AJ Bouye is likely to be cut by the Jaguars this offseason as they begin what looks to be a complete overhaul with Tom Coughlin out and the roster in flux.

Of course, if Bouye does hit the open market, he will have no shortage of suitors. He was the 6th highest rated CB in 2017 according to PFF, and was also ranked by PFF as the 7th best CB in the league heading into 2019. So why the cut?

Bouye had a bit of a down year in 2019. With the departure of Jalen Ramsey, he became the top CB and was tasked with matching up against opponents top options, and he struggled at times to do so. Add in the $11.5 million in cap savings available to the Jaguars by cutting Bouye before March 18, and the picture becomes a little bit clearer.

And while the 49ers have cap issues of their own heading into 2020 free agency, they have shown the ability to be creative with contracts allowing them to make room for the players that they want to sign.

Bouye is 28 years old and despite the down season still remains a top CB in the league. He would be perfect to play opposite of Richard Sherman, giving the 49ers a top duo at corner to combine with their already solid depth at defensive line and linebacker.

The big question of course is the price tag. And that is important. But given the down season in 2019, and the fact that the 49ers are now an attractive destination for free agents, it is possible that they could sign Bouye at a slight discount. And really, given the scarcity of quality DBs in the NFL, how much is too much?

I generally don’t advocate for high dollar signings in FA. I prefer value. And as of now I’m not 100% sure which category AJ Bouye is going to fall under. But if the Jaguars decide to cut him and allow him to enter free agency, I would strongly recommend that John Lynch and company pick up the phone and make every effort to make Bouye a member of the red and gold in 2020.
