Jets Sign WR Josh Doctson

Washington Redskins v Philadelphia Eagles

The New York Jets have signed free agent wide receiver Josh Doctson.

Josh Doctson is a 27 year old, 6’ 2”, 210 pound wide receiver originally drafted by the Washington Redskins with the 22nd overall selection in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft. Doctson spent most of his rookie season with the Redskins on the injured reserve list. His next two seasons he had some modest success, accumulating more than 500 yards each season on 78 targets each year. Doctson was cut by the Redskins prior to the start of the 2019 NFL regular season, and he was signed by the Minnesota Vikings. Doctson spent most of the 2019 season on injured reserve, and he was cut by the Vikings in November without ever recording a catch.

Doctson ran a 4.5 second 40 yard dash at the NFL combine, and exhibited some impressive hops with a 41” vertical leap. He will turn 28 years old during the 2020 season. At that age, with significant injury problems in two of four years in the NFL and relatively modest production in the two years he was healthy, expectations for Doctson should probably be low. He has some interesting physical traits, but going into his fifth year in the league, time is running out on any upside he may have once possessed. The Jets are in dire need of talent at wide receiver, with Jamison Crowder currently the only proven NFL receiver under contract. Perhaps a fresh start will allow Doctson to deliver on his first round potential and become part of the solution.
