Every NFL team’s most improved player in 2019 - PFF
Philadelphia Eagles: EDGE Vinny Curry. I don’t think people understand how disruptive Curry was as a rotational pass-rusher this past season on the Eagles’ defensive line. Altogether, 99 different edge defenders rushed the passer 200 or more times over the course of the regular season, and among those players, Curry ranked tied for fifth in pressure rate (16.8%) with T.J. Watt. The fact that he was effective in Philadelphia shouldn’t be all that much of a surprise because he has multiple seasons of solid play with the Eagles. It is surprising just how effective he was, though, particularly given how poorly he played for the Buccaneers in 2018. Last year in Tampa Bay, Curry had an overall grade of just 58.4 with a pressure rate below 10%. Prospective suitors this offseason will be hoping he repeats his 2019 performance rather than reverting to the play he managed after the last time he left Philadelphia.

Question from Hinkie: I understand that the Eagles desperately need help at corner, but I really think Byron Jones would be a mistake. His lack of splash plays is alarming, and he’s hardly a shut down corner. He’s good obviously, but if he’s not producing turnovers and he’s not taking away half the field why is he worth top CB money? IMO he’s not and any team paying him as the top CB in the NFL is going to regret it. ... I think that’s a reasonable concern, and certainly he’s going to be paid more than he’s worth, as are other corners in free agency. The Eagles, however, don’t have a choice, in my view, as they’re going to have to overpay for someone. The alternative is to field another secondary that gets roasted every week. Ideally, they’d have hit on Sidney Jones or Rasul Douglas. They whiffed on both. The punishment a few years later comes in the form of having to overpay in free agency.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: Byron Jones, cornerback. As is evidenced in this file, Jones will be sought after in this group of free agents. One only needs to watch about two or three episodes in the latest season of “All Or Nothing” to realize how badly the Eagles need to upgrade their cornerback position. Sure, Jalen Mills’ return helped, but he’s going to be a free agent in March. The Eagles battled injuries all over their roster in 2019 and perhaps no position group was more devastated than the secondary (though receiver could make a strong case). Jones isn’t a turnover producer, but he would give the Eagles a strong cornerback that they wish Sidney Jones would’ve grown to become by this point. Plus, adding Byron Jones would mean stealing a quality player from the rival Cowboys.
A WR Corps - Iggles Blitz
There is a good chance the Eagles aren’t going to have a traditional #1 type receiver in the upcoming season. That would be okay. Carson Wentz was at his best in 2017 when he spread the ball around. He didn’t feed the ball to any one WR or TE. The offense changed from game to game, heck from series to series. That can be a very effective attack. The Eagles will have Robert Davis, Deontay Burnett, Marken Michel, Shelton Gibson and Marcus Green as part of the 90-man roster. Davis and Burnett showed some potential late in the season and they could compete for roster spots. At the least, they offer some depth when the inevitable injury occurs. The Eagles could also spend a late pick on a receiver, with the idea that guy might be practice squad material and someone to develop for the future.

With Nigel Bradham now gone, there are only eight starters left on the Eagles’ roster from their Super Bowl triumph just 24 months ago. And that number could continue to dwindle, depending on what the Eagles do with Alshon Jeffery, whether Jason Kelce returns for a 10th season and whether Malcolm Jenkins gets a new deal or plays under his current one. The only other starters from the Super Bowl under contract for 2020 are Zach Ertz, Brandon Brooks and Lane Johnson on offense and Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham on defense.
NFL announces changes to Scouting Combine drills - PFT
Running backs have three new drills, including one named after Eagles running back Duce Staley. The drill calls for backs to step over bags while reading coaches to find a hole to run through in simulation of a zone read play. They’ll also work on pass routes with change of direction while pitch and cone and find the ball drills have been eliminated.

The process of negotiating a new NFL collective bargaining agreement, which began about 10 months ago, might be nearing an end. Or it might not be. And unfortunately, that’s about as clear as we can be on this subject right now. Thursday and Friday were weighty days for the negotiations between the NFL’s players and owners. On Thursday, the owners voted to approve the CBA proposal on the table, which has been negotiated between the two sides since last April. The current CBA ends after the 2020 season. That made it seem as if things might be proceeding toward a happy conclusion for both sides. But on Friday, the players’ end of things turned chaotic, and left open the possibility that the two sides would not come to an agreement in time for the start of the 2020 league year next month. You have questions. We have answers.

These moves were to be expected, as both players carried unfavorable contracts heading into the 2020 season. With the releases, the Bears create $13.5 million of cap space, giving them some much-needed flexibility for the free agency period ahead.

The Defenders come in as 8.5-point favorites, and we could see a blowout leading to plenty of carries in the Defenders backfield.
