A safety is on the board.
There is no question that safety is at the very top of needs that the Dallas Cowboys currently have. You can make an argument for cornerback, but at worst safety is number two.
For so long the Cowboys have struggled to find a playmaking safety. There have been some moments of promise and what has undoubtedly been legitimate potential from different players, but nevertheless things usually don’t materialize for the team at that particular spot.
It’s hard to predict the future, that much is certain. But what people want to see is the Cowboys doing what they can to find a safety and they are the very least giving it a shot in free agency. There is a new safety in town, an old friend of the new head coach.
The Dallas Cowboys are bringing in safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix
Way back in the weeks and months leading up to the 2014 NFL Draft there was a contingency of Cowboys fans that wanted to see the team spend their first round pick on a certain safety. Dallas ultimately took Zack Martin and it’s safe to say nobody is mad about that.
Six years later though the stars have aligned and that safety is now theirs. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is headed to America’s Team.

It’s easy to understand why Ha Ha would want to play for the 2020 Dallas Cowboys as they are coached by the head coach that he has known the longest in Mike McCarthy. Clinton-Dix played for McCarthy’s Green Bay Packers from 2014 all the way until the team traded him during the 2018 season. Since then he’s been with both Washington and Chicago.
We talked back in January about how Ha Ha made a lot of sense for McCarthy’s Cowboys when free agency rolled around. Not only does Ha Ha have experience under McCarthy, he has a great amount of respect for him. The safety has defended his former head coach in the public eye before and that says a lot.
As far as what the Cowboys will be getting in Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, he is 27 years old and likely wanting to make a name for himself. He could be a classic “one-year prove-it” type player as, per NFL Network’s Jane Slater, he is signing a one-year deal worth $4M with $2.5M guaranteed.
Clinton-Dix came in as PFF’s 19th best safety on defense last season (he played 16 games with the Bears) so there is certainly good football left in him. As mentioned the Cowboys have needed help at safety for some time now, but with Jeff Heath leaving for the Las Vegas Raiders the need was all the more large.
It happened. Welcome to the Dallas Cowboys, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.
