Buffalo Bills exercise fifth-year option on Tre’Davious White

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles at Buffalo Bills Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

As expected.

The Buffalo Bills, on the eve of the 2020 NFL Draft, have reportedly exercised the fifth-year option on cornerback Tre’Davious White’s contract. The news was first advanced by ESPN’s Field Yates.

This is a move everyone expected, with White coming off a breakout season that saw him named first-team All-Pro by The Associated Press. In 2019, White set a career high with six interceptions and two forced fumbles. He defended 17 passes and didn’t allow a single touchdown in coverage.

Setting the fifth-year option will eventually award White roughly $10 million in salary, based on the average of the top 32 salaries for his position. That money is guaranteed in the case of injury. Of course, it’s likely the first step in negotiating a massive contract extension between the team and its burgeoning star.

White is the first member of the Buffalo Bills to have his fifth-year option exercised since Stephon Gilmore, the team’s 2012 first-round pick. Gilmore was the other starting cornerback on 2019’s All-Pro roster, but as a member of the New England Patriots.
