Cowboys Conduct Draft Interview w/ Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts - Jess Haynie, Inside the Star
The Cowboys interviewed a quarterback on Saturday.
Earlier today the Dallas Cowboys shared a digital interview conducted with Quarterback Jalen Hurts, the former starter for the Oklahoma Sooners and Alabama Crimson Tide. Given Hurts’ high profile from his college career, was this just a marketing move for Dallas or an indication of what they may be doing in the 2020 NFL Draft?
The Cowboys only put up a snippet of their interview with Hurts on their Instagram page this morning. It shows Jerry Jones cracking a joke with the fellow coaches and executives, then a brief portion of Hurts’ comments.

The Cowboys don’t shy away from giving second chances, but does that mean a Dez reunion with his old team is coming?
As it stands, Stephen Jones is now open to the idea of re-signing Bryant, and owner Jerry Jones says “don’t dismiss it” because he “thinks about it in the shower”, a Jerryism to truly drive home how the once impossibility is now entirely possible. Neither Jones is willing to interfere with what McCarthy has been empowered to build, however, so the final decision will be his. But if McCarthy can see value in Smith, it stands to reason he’d see some in Bryant, and especially with the front office and star players helping the record-setting three-time Pro Bowler make his case.
So while Prescott hammers out the details on what will be a historic contract for himself, he’s also lending a hand to help pull Bryant back onto the roster. The Cowboys are hoping Prescott signs next to the “X” sometime soon, and Bryant is hoping Prescott can help him put an “X” back in the end zone
Baylor WR Denzel Mims on Cowboys radar for 2020 NFL Draft - Todd Brock, Cowboys Wire
The Cowboys have FaceTimed some players as they get better acquainted with some of the college prospects, including the star receiver from Baylor.
Wide receiver Denzel Mims was proclaimed one of the “winners” at the NFL Scouting Combine, showing off a ridiculous catch radius and tearing up the 3-cone drill. The Baylor burner recorded a 4.38 40-yard dash, tying him for the fifth-fastest time in Indianapolis this year. Mims has been a big climber on most draft boards, and it seems more and more teams are catching on.

Penn State WR KJ Hamler Fits Slot Need for the Cowboys - Matthew Lenix, Inside the Star
With a deep wide receiver draft class, the Cowboys may look to cash in, but who will that be? Here’s a good candidate to replace the recently departed Randall Cobb.
The Cowboys have a need at the slot receiver position with the departure of veteran Randall Cobb to the Houston Texans. LSU’s Justin Jefferson, TCU’s Jalen Reagor, and Texas’s Devin Duvernay are three of the top slot receivers coming out of college. However, Penn State’s KJ Hamler is another option the Cowboys could steal on day two of the draft. Every team wants their best players to perform well in the biggest games and Hamler had some huge performances against Penn State’s top rivals.
In 2018, albeit in a loss, he had 138 yards and a touchdown vs Ohio State. This past season, he had six receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns in a win vs Michigan.

Round 1: WR Jerry Jeudy, Alabama
Best available player: When the Cowboys came on the clock Jeudy was at the top of the board, and since we’re taking best available player regardless of position that’s what I did. Now, there’s nothing wrong with Jeudy. In fact, if you’re thinking about bolstering the Cowboys’ wide receiver corps further he’d be a great selection. But with Amari Cooper under contract and Michael Gallup returning, is another potential No. 1 receiver something the Cowboys really need? To take Jeudy, the Cowboys had to ignore other needs like cornerback, safety and defensive line.

Jaylon Johnson — Utah — 6’0 — 193
Overall: He was so good that he actually seemed to get less and less action as his career went along, but other than perhaps losing focus, there was very little happening that would burn his hands at the Pac-12 level. Johnson is what I look for in a corner who can play in multiple schemes and do so with a high aptitude of knowledge, then be able to execute it. He isn’t a perfect player, and there are a few questions, but I really like him, and he is probably sneaking into my top five corners. A SECOND-ROUND grade is what I’d give him, and he’d be a strong idea if he were to make it somehow to No. 51.

Here’s a little exercise to get a feel for who might be available at cornerback at the spot the Cowboys pick in every round of the draft.
Jaylon Johnson, Utah Round
Grade: Late 2nd/Early 3rd
Value: Correct
Percentage Available: 90%
Johnson was the best available cornerback for the second round in all ten trials. A.J. Terrell was available only on seven of the ten trials, hence not meeting the 80 percent threshold. Even with Johnson being the consolation prize here, he would still be a great addition to the team. In man coverage, Johnson looks a bit hesitant. He’s quick to sit on his heels and it results in a slower movement. There are some questions surrounding his hip flexibility and his combine did little to dismiss those questions. He is good at using his length to disrupt receivers, but because he is fairly inconsistent at moving off the line of scrimmage, he can lose leverage on receivers he should otherwise be locking down. In zone coverage, however, Johnson displays good instincts reading the quarterback’s eyes while also switching off assignments and pattern matching pretty well. Utah was very reliant on good corner play and Johnson with plenty of single-high safety looks and Johnson showed the ability to have range as a deeper zone defender.

What’s Next: The Cowboys and Looney agreed on a new one-year contract in late March, a few days before Frederick announced his retirement. That move now has considerably more importance. The Cowboys have other in-house options for replacing Frederick, including last year’s third-round pick Connor McGovern, a heralded center at Penn State. But Looney by far has the most experience of any interior lineman on the current roster. Experience could be the deciding factor if the nation’s COVID-19 crisis severely limits on-field offseason training time for the Cowboys and the rest of the league.

Nov. 26, 2018: Smith pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges as part of a plea deal with San Francisco prosecutors to settle his domestic violence case from earlier in 2018. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years of probation. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Smith was permitted to serve the sentence at an inpatient alcohol and drug treatment center.
