After reading what many have said these last few months, I think I have finally deciphered the perfect recipe for the 2020 Chicago Bears.
After scouring over the thoughts and concerns about the Chicago Bears tight end group from several members of the national NFL media on Twitter, I’ve come to a conclusion. These “experts” actually think the Bears plan to carry all the tight ends that are currently on their 90-man offseason roster on their opening day 53-man roster. I’ve seen countless fans (no Bears’ fans of course) cracking wise on the team for the large tight end room too, so they must feel Chicago’s offense plans on using them all as well.
If they didn’t think that, then why else spend so much time crafting poorly executed jokes and/or puns about the Bears having 9 players on the offseason roster at the same position. A position that has three separate positions within it (Y, U, and H-back), but still technically only one “tight end” position on a roster sheet.
Anyway, here’s the 53-man roster prediction that I could gather based on all the chatter...
TE (9)
Ben Braunecker, Darion Clark, Jimmy Graham, Demetrius Harris, J.P. Holtz, Jesper Horsted, Cole Kmet, Eric Saubert, Adam Shaheen
With the Bears planning to reveal a 9 tight end offense with their 19 personnel package (1 running back, 9 tight ends) Shaheen’s roster spot remains safe for one more year. By the way, that 9 tight end offense joke has been my favorite Bears tight end joke of all. I think I may have almost lol’ed the first time I saw it.
QB (1)
Nick Foles or Mitchell Trubisky
With so many tight ends making it, the Bears are forced to go with the winner of this QB battle as their lone quarterback on the roster. But don’t worry, Tyler Bray has practice squad eligibility and will be around in case of emergency.
RB (3)
Tarik Cohen, David Montgomery, Ryan Nall
Even though he’s yet to ever play (or practice) the position as a professional, Bears’ fans keep telling me that Nall is the future at Fullback/H-Back for the Bears. And considering the national media is adamant on the Bears ‘collecting all’ the tight ends, Nall’s ability to play H-Back (that we’ve yet to see) makes him a lock as a back up when the Bears trot out their 19 package.
WR (7)
Ted Ginn Jr., Anthony Miller, Cordarrelle Patterson, Riley Ridley, Allen Robinson II, Ahmad Wagner, Javon Wims
If a surprise move, the Bears will keep 6’5”, 234 pound undrafted free agent Ahmad Wagner on the active roster because he has U tight end athleticism and you can never have too many tight end prospects. Patterson has expressed a willingness to play tight end if needed which makes him a lock, and fans have often told me that Wims would make a good tight end too.

Charles Leno Jr., Bobby Massie, James Daniels, Cody Whitehair, Germain Ifedi, Bradley Sowell, Rashaad Coward
Yeah, I know he’s still a free agent, but with Matt Nagy’s offense needing a plethora of tight ends, the Bears would be smart to bring back Sowell to not only back-up on the offensive line, but to also give them some depth at the Y tight end. With roster spots at a premium, Coward’s collegiate experience on defense will allow him to back up both sides of the ball.

No surprises here, but did you know that both Scales and O’Donnell played tight end in high school?

Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman, Bilal Nichols, Roy Robertson-Harris, Brent Urban, Kyle Long
Recent “rumors” of the Jets going after Kyle Long got me thinking... What if he did come back to the Bears to play a little defensive end and now that he’s dropped a bunch of weight, tight end as well? Urban also played hockey and basketball in high school and that sounds like a candidate to play a little tight end to me!
OLB (4)
Khalil Mack, Robert Quinn, Trevis Gipson, Barkevious Mingo
With the tight ends taking up so much roster space the Bears will have to suffer at both outside and inside linebacker with just 7 total players. Mack started his high school career playing quarterback, so if the Bears need a QB2 Mack is that man!
ILB (3)
Danny Trevathan, Roquan Smith, Josh Woods
Woods’ was a corner/wide receiver in high school and his 35 receptions, 800 yards, and 10 touchdowns as a McDonogh High School Eagle might come in handy for some classic Nagy trickeration.
S (5)
Eddie Jackson, Tashaun Gipson, Deon Bush, Sherrick McManis, DeAndre Houston-Carson
Jackson and Gipson are two more 2-way high school stars that could factor in for some trick plays. McManis makes it because he can play anywhere in the secondary.
CB (5)
Kyle Fuller, Jaylon Johnson, Buster Skrine, Kevin Toliver II, Kindle Vildor
I wish I had something witty to say about the corners, but this bit is getting stale.
