The legendary 49er reflected back on what Mike Shanahan told him prior to the 1992 season.
We are all eager to see how San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will bounce back after a crushing Super Bowl loss.
Garoppolo has plenty of doubters, despite being 21-5 as an NFL starter, but he will be judged on championships, not regular season accomplishments going forward.
Former Niners QB Steve Young talked with The Athletic’s David Lombardi, and reflected on what current 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan’s father Mike told him prior to his first full season as a starter in 1992:
“I remember (Kyle’s) dad said to me: ‘Steve, I’m going to be as aggressive as I possibly can, and I want you to protect me,’” Young said. “That, I think, is the statement Jimmy needs to look for, to get from Kyle: ‘Jimmy, I’m going to be as aggressive as I possibly can. I want you to protect me.’”
San Francisco didn’t need Garoppolo to be effective passing the ball when it demolished the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers with the run game in the playoffs. But, in the Super Bowl, Garoppolo failed to produce much through the air when the team needed him to in the fourth quarter when he went 3-for-11 for 36 yards, and a 2.8 passer rating.
I think Shanahan likes Garoppolo’s game, but doesn’t fully trust him yet. Shanahan’s passing play designs are among the best in the NFL, and we rarely saw Garoppolo have deep completions on contested passes last year.
Young had one more quote in the piece that stuck with me as well:
“When you get there and you don’t get it done, that’s — you don’t get it done, so you eat that,” Young said of Garoppolo in a phone interview last week. “And that has to be something that drives you forward.”
I am interested to see how Garoppolo responds to a devastating loss. With a full offseason to train and fine tune his game, I expect Garoppolo to come back hungry to get the job done.
