Roger Goodell finally did the right thing. It took him long enough. The NFL commissioner recorded a video on Friday night where he looked into the camera and admitted that the NFL was “wrong” in not listening to players “earlier”. “We the National Football League admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest,” he said. Perhaps he could’ve been more direct, but let’s say it out loud — the league was wrong for pushing back when former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (though Goodell didn’t mention him by name) and many others decided to protest during the national anthem a few years ago to shine a lot on systemic racism and police brutality.

Drew Brees answered President Donald Trump in a Friday night post on social media. He also answered the question of whether his feelings about kneeling during the national anthem have changed. The president said the Saints quarterback was right to criticize kneeling during the national anthem and wrong to apologize for his statement. Brees twice apologized for likening kneeling during the national anthem to disrespecting America. Brees now says he regrets his comments, which “turn people away or distract them from the real issues that face our black communities.”

In summary, the Eagles started to have problems at cornerback back in 2018. Their problem was two-fold: their starters weren’t very good, and their backups weren’t much better when they were healthy, which was infrequently at best. They hoped that Mills’ confidence would lead to growth; that Darby would return to form; that Sidney Jones would put together a good camp and win a starting job. It didn’t work, so in 2019, they did it again. It didn’t work, so in 2020, they moved Jalen Mills to safety, replaced Darby with Slay, and cut their best secondary player in the process. They entered this offseason with gaps at CB1 and CB2 and left with gaps at CB2 and SAF1. They didn’t get better; they just shuffled the deck.

Javon Hargrave - Iggles Blitz
Hargrave isn’t a guy you double-team. You focus on stopping Fletcher Cox and hope the C or G blocking Hargrave can get the job done. Hargrave will make teams pay if they don’t pay him enough attention. This addition gives the Eagles flexibility with Jackson. They can use him off the bench at DT or he could even see some snaps at DE. The Eagles defense forced one or fewer turnovers in 10 of 16 regular season games last year. Part of that was on the secondary play. Part on the LBs. But some of it was on the DL. Those guys weren’t disruptive enough. Hargrave should help to change that.

Could these developments lead to the return of Kaepernick? It’s entirely possible that the circumstances that have brought about this week’s events — more players, coaches and general managers than ever speaking out, the commissioner issuing a statement in direct response to a request from his players, protests breaking out across the nation — could make an NFL team more likely to sign Kaepernick than it might have been before. There’s little doubt at this point that a huge part of the reason no team has signed the quarterback since 2016 is the stance he took that year and concern about how people might’ve reacted to such a signing. But if the league office is now openly condoning the kinds of protests Kaepernick initiated, and if franchise leaders are directly addressing the issues of police brutality and institutional racism that Kaepernick wanted to bring to light, it’s fair to think that those concerns might have abated.

However, the league’s players worked together to create one of the most powerful videos yet, not only addressing the core issues — but challenging the NFL to do better.
