Zach Ertz, TE, Philadelphia Eagles. Ertz tied for the league lead with four touchdown receptions last season in the tight red zone, and since the 2017 season, his 11 touchdown receptions there are tied for most in the NFL with New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas. Yes, coach Doug Pederson is going to scheme for Ertz in this area of the field, but don’t sleep on the matchup ability or the route-running traits of the Eagles’ tight end here. Ertz is smooth through the route stem, weaving defenders in coverage and gaining separation to the ball. Plus, with his 6-foot-5 frame and catch radius, Ertz can also body up defensive backs to create leverage to the ball.

3. Zach Ertz, Philadelphia Eagles. This one was clear-cut. Ertz was No. 3 or 4 on most ballots behind Kittle and Kelce. No tight end has more targets the past two seasons than Ertz’s 291, partly because he gets open so often — and smoothly. “A lot like Kelce. Runs up on guys, threatens the safety,” one veteran NFL coach said. “He won’t let [the defense] dictate his route. He attacks it. Loose, fluid. Gets a ton of double coverage and still wins.” He’s also similar to Kelce in that his blocking is considered just OK. But Ertz has Dallas Goedert to handle inline work while he plays to his strengths. Ertz turned 16 red zone targets into eight catches and five touchdowns. His five drops are not ideal but reasonable given his target share. “There’s a drop-off after Kittle and Kelce, but this guy is a championship-level player,” one AFC exec said. “He smokes us almost every time we play them. He doesn’t beat you deep, but he doesn’t need to because he’s so good with the intermediate stuff. I’d take him above almost everybody.”

On the other hand, one still must wonder about Jackson’s durability. He’s played in just 63% of possible games over the past five seasons. Jackson is coming off core muscle surgery and he turns 34 this year. He’s likely not going to be available for all 16 games, which he’s only ever done twice and not since 2013. Unlike last year, Howie Roseman made an effort to add some speed insurance behind Jackson this offseason. But those backup plans might not amount to much. The reality is the Eagles still need Jackson to stay relatively healthy. They also need him to stay out of further trouble off the field. The Eagles penalized Jackson for the anti-Semitic sentiment he shared on Instagram. They’re counting on him to back up his apologies with meaningful action that demonstrates genuine growth and remorse. Jackson can’t afford another misstep.

Did we get it right? No question about it. Peters made the Pro Bowl in seven straight seasons in which he played, was a two-time 1st-team all-pro and delivered elite left tackle performance for nearly a decade, blocking for every Eagles quarterback from Donovan McNabb to Carson Wentz. If anyone got snubbed, it’s Al Wistert, who was a four-time 1st-team all-pro, so he made all-pro as many times as every other guy on the list combined. He should be higher, but there’s some recency bias at work here.

I don’t know how COVID-19 will impact in-season trades and waiver-wire pickups, but I would guess that it might limit player movement. We might even see an enlarged practice squad so that teams will already have replacements in their building when players are injured or become sick. Trades? They might be impacted by how many games actually get played and by how stringently a state like New Jersey applies travel restrictions to NFL players. You’re probably not making a trade deadline move for a guy if he has to quarantine for two weeks before he can even practice. There are so many unknowns, and things are changing almost on a daily basis. Honestly, I will be amazed if the NFL has a full 16-game season.

There is perhaps no more famous number in Dallas Cowboys history than 88. The original was, of course, Drew Pearson, while the flashiest and most successful was Michael Irvin. Dez Bryant carried the number very well to the point that he caught more touchdowns than anybody who has ever played for the team. That’s a tough standard to live up to. However big the expectations are of a number 88, the Cowboys clearly believe that CeeDee Lamb is capable of living up to them. They handed him the number after drafting him 17th overall, in the middle of some usual debate, and we have long waited to get a look at him wearing it ever since. The wait is over.

7) Dallas Cowboys. Dallas oozes offensive talent. Ezekiel Elliott is still one of the NFL’s top running backs. The Amari Cooper-Michael Gallup-CeeDee Lamb trio at receiver is dreamy. Yes, Lamb was highway robbery at the No. 17 pick; he’s going to be a star. With Mike McCarthy coaching him up, Dak Prescott will dominate and put up gaudy numbers. (Note to Jerry and Stephen Jones: The longer everyone drags their feet on this extension, the more it’s going to cost.) Don’t be surprised when this offense carries Dallas to the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC playoffs. While losing Byron Jones was a blow to the defense, Dallas still has horses on that side. I still strongly believe in Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith. DeMarcus Lawrence and Gerald McCoy should present plenty of problems for opposing offensive lines.

It’s a shame when those Week 17 games end up being meaningless for either one side or both teams. Maybe that’s something the league needs to adjust.
