Training Camp Press Conference - Linebackers Coach Steve Russ https://t.co/qvOxspV93J
— Washington Football Team (@WashingtonNFL) August 4, 2020
Russ gets a Ryan Anderson question. Anderson is listed as a LB. However (plot twist), Russ says he hasn’t worked with RA because he’s in the DL room. Okay, that should end the position discussion. I think.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) August 4, 2020
"We can be demanding without being demeaning." LB coach Steve Russ, who played for Air Force and was in the service, said of what he and coach Ron Rivera are bringing with their military background. Said the word discipline gets a negative rap.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 4, 2020
Russ said he treats, teaches and interacts with Reuben Foster as if he's cleared to play. Foster, who tore his ACL last May, is currently on the Physically Unable To Perform list.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 4, 2020
Fun detail: Steve Russ quizzes guys during meetings and over Zoom, if he's not called on, Reuben Foster will put himself on mute and mimic the calls with hand gestures. He's still answering even if not asked.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 4, 2020
Russ said LB Cole Holcomb is a “very raw player”. Said he’s working on the rough edges (key reads; initial footwork) all stuff that Holcomb knew needed work. Calls Holcomb a film junkie (talked to him about this last year; he watches a ton. So does Bostic/Davis).
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 4, 2020
As a player, Steve Russ thought Steve Atwater was the best leader he had ever been around. But he says Thomas Davis tops that. "That's no knock on Steve." High, high praise.

Training Camp Press Conference - Head Coach Ron Rivera https://t.co/mdcpxV7wsl
— Washington Football Team (@WashingtonNFL) August 4, 2020
Ron Rivera said the Dontrelle Inman signing should be official this morning.
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 4, 2020
Ron Rivera likes Ronald Darby's explosiveness and ability to attack the ball. Said sometimes he does get caught with eyes in the backfield and needs to be more disciplined. He doesn't see any deterioration in his skill set.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 4, 2020
Ron Rivera gives the Alex Smith update. Very impressed so far. pic.twitter.com/uUXnpXH4AE
— michael phillips (@michaelpRTD) August 4, 2020
Rivera says he imagines Alex Smith knows about 75% of the playbook. How about Haskins?
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) August 4, 2020
Rivera says Haskins isn’t far behind that. Praised Haskins work. Said he “has done the job that deserves recognition.”
Ron Rivera said instead of giving Antonio Gibson the entire list of what he has to do, they're giving him the plays he has to focus on between RB and WR. They don't want to overwhelm him, and they'll add more as time moves on.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 4, 2020
Rivera excited to see the left tackle battle play out. Mentions the two youngsters, Charles and Christian specifically. The center and right side appears set, as expected.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) August 4, 2020
Ron Rivera, when asked about what happened to Eagles coach Doug Pederson, said they have a contingency plan. Talked about it two weeks ago. They have assistant coaches in place, and he said his coaches have to release they maybe asked to step at a moment's notice.

One thing to remember with this line, Alex Smith played under Norv Turner back in 2006, his second year in the league. So Scott Turner’s system shouldn’t be totally unfamiliar to him. He’s been very complimentary of the system before. https://t.co/2EJxIVucU9 https://t.co/LccmfTKB1H pic.twitter.com/dcaNqprvod

In Washington, the U TE and the ZE (slot) receiver were completely interchangeable from a schematic standpoint, but you need the personnel to be able to do it. A healthy Reed gives the 49ers that flexibility. Then defenses have to make a choice with base or nickel package. pic.twitter.com/yEAM8i8oRY

The #Ravens informed rookie TE Jake Breeland they’re waiving him as injured, per source.

The former Oregon standout is 9½ months removed from ACL reconstruction. An intriguing stash-and-develop prospect who Baltimore wants to keep around for 2021, if he clears waivers.

Lions insist that Matthew Stafford had a false positive result for COVID-19, which raises two important questions: (1) how do they know it was a false positive?; and (2) how many false negatives are being generated? https://t.co/k2xgo0LXWf

The deadline to opt out of the 2020 season is scheduled for Thursday, August 6th (4pm ET).@TomPelissero has the latest on what that means for NFL teams pic.twitter.com/K5nBYz2Hcb
— NFL Network (@nflnetwork) August 4, 2020
NFL admits to providing "bad info" to PFT on this; the $150K stipend is a salary advance that must be repaid. For "higher risk" players who opt out, the payment is $350,000, and it is not subject to repayment or recovery.
— ProFootballTalk (@ProFootballTalk) August 4, 2020
Here's the language from the NFL-NFLPA side letter on compensation for players who opt out. Note the $350,000 high-risk stipend "shall not be offset by any other earned compensation or treated as a salary advance."
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 4, 2020
It's the player's money and they don't have to pay it back. pic.twitter.com/hZbJt7h4PR
The NFL and NFLPA agreed to extend the deadline for players living with high-risk individual(s) to request alternate housing for the entire season to Week 1, or seven days after a later diagnosis, per source.
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 4, 2020
Clubs must provide housing, which counts as a player benefit cost.
What happens if a player is diagnosed with COVID-19 or quarantined on the night before or morning of a game this season?
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 4, 2020
The NFL will permit clubs to elevate a practice squad player with notice to the league office up until 90 minutes before kickoff, per source.
Another big item resolved late in NFL-NFLPA negotiations:
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 4, 2020
Any player defined as higher-risk --including undrafted free agents and players who didn't earn a credited season in 2019 -- qualify for the same $350,000 stipend if they choose to opt out of the 2020 season, per source.
Several roster changes we’ve discussed are now official for 2020:
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 4, 2020
- 16-man practice squad (up to 6 with no limit on accrued seasons)
- Protect up to 4 P-squad members each Tuesday
- Starting 4 p.m. ET Sept. 6, unlimited players can return from injured reserve, after 3 weeks
Other potential fines for violating NFL-NFLPA protocols, after written warning for first offense:
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 4, 2020
- Refusal to submit to virus testing: $50,000
- Refusal to wear mask, PPE or tracking device, or maintain social distancing during team travel: progressive discipline up to $14,650
The memo that went out to teams updating them on new terms of the league/union agreement on COVID-19 rules. pic.twitter.com/YIiI1Itcup
— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) August 4, 2020
Important to note: All Tier 1 and Tier 2 non-player club employees (coaches, medical staff, et al.) are subject to comparable discipline to what may be imposed on players for violations of COVID-19 rules. And Commissioner may discipline clubs that don't impose such discipline. https://t.co/ZvVhL1MUnq
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 4, 2020
No warning letter is required for these violations - 40% of max fine for first offense, 70% for 2nd, 100% for 3rd, conduct detrimental for 4th. Also, players negotiated a specific mention that other team employees (coaches, execs) are subject to same discipline. pic.twitter.com/Sk0A4n7ABr

Here's that last AB from Franmil Reyes. Don't tell me this is a guy who gives a s**t right now. He's just going through the motions. And these pitches are right down the middle. Notice he doesn't even take the bat off his shoulder on these last 2 pitches.#Indians pic.twitter.com/GQ3fLJBW75
