Just like with bad play, better to get them now than when it matters most ... as long as they aren’t severe, of course.
Good morning, Broncos Country!
There is no doubt the excitement is back.
For the first time since Peyton Manning retired, it feels like the Denver Broncos are back on track. It’s amazing what happens when you get a quarterback. That’s not to anoint Drew Lock just yet, but it sure beats having more fool’s gold to force excitement over.
The one way this excitement and the 2020 season could get derailed is injuries.
On the MHR Radio Podcast, Adam Malnati and I talked about the injury list the Broncos have right now. It’s a pretty long list, Broncos writer Aric DiLalla pointed out. And that was before the scrimmage on Saturday at Mile High. The good news is Bradley Chubb prematurely leaving practice was just a precaution. As he told Troy Renck, “All good, just being smart as we can.” The other notable injury from Saturday was guard Graham Glasgow. While the severity isn’t known, Vic Fangio said Glasgow tweaked his ankle. John Elway told News Radio 850 KOA that Glasgow sprained his ankle and wasn’t overly concerned. Hopefully that ankle injury isn’t severe or lingers, as they are known to do.
Not practicing (Day 10):
— Aric DiLalla (@AricDiLalla) August 25, 2020
K. Hamler (hamstring)
J. Winfree (groin)
M. Ojemudia (quad)
A. Holder (soft tissue)
J. Strnad (wrist, out for season)
D. Bausby (soft tissue)
T. Davis (calf)
M. Carney (sick, not COVID-related)
T. Patrick (soft tissue)
A. Fort (knee)
M. Purcell (calf)
The vast majority of the Broncos injuries are soft tissue related. On most occasions, that means muscles. As I told Adam, when you go from zero to 100 as Denver has done since training camp started in early August, that’s bound to happen. The Broncos haven’t had organized team activities (OTAs) or minicamp like they have in previous years. We’re seeing the result of that. No matter how hard you work in your home gym or park, you can’t mimic a NFL practice.
The hope is all of these soft tissue and muscle injuries aren’t persistent. That’s especially true for rookie receiver KJ Hamler, who is dealing with a hamstring issue. The last thing you want with a speed receiver is a hamstring injury. That would help explain why he’s not practicing, as to ensure it doesn’t turn into something worse. Since we don’t know the severity, that’s all we can do right now.
We knew we were in for a unique season. That’s life in 2020.
There’s no doubt the excitement is back in Broncos Country. It truly does feel like the Broncos are on the right path, even if it doesn’t manifest itself this season. The one way this could all get derailed is injuries. Just like with bad play, better to get them now than when it matters most ... as long as they aren’t severe, of course.
