The Cleveland Browns claimed defensive end Curtis Weaver off waivers on Tuesday.
In a corresponding transaction, the Browns placed safety Grant Delpit on injured reserve with a torn Achilles tendon.

Weaver was a fifth-round selection of the Miami Dolphins in the 2020 NFL Draft. As a redshirt junior with Boise State in 2019, Weaver earned Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honors and finished his collegiate career as the conference’s career leader in sacks with 34.
The Dolphins had placed Weaver on waivers with a foot injury on Monday to open up a roster spot to re-sign linebacker Trent Harris. Miami planned to put Weaver on injured reserve once he cleared waivers, but Browns general manager Andrew Berry put a stop to that plan by claiming Weaver.
The nature of Weaver’s foot injury is unclear, although Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post reported that it is “pretty serious”:

Weaver’s ability to get to the quarterback caught the attention of Kyle Crabbs at The Draft Network prior to the draft:
Curtis Weaver projects well as a base defensive end at the NFL level. He’s not for everyone — those expecting a lot of bend, twitch and range will likely be lower on Weaver’s skillset. Weaver is a polished pass rusher with heavy hands and nifty counters to shed contact, he’ll do well in tight alignment to win with his hands but flashes enough juice to win in wide angles as well courtesy of his chop/rip combo and ability to drop the inside shoulder. Projects as a 6-8 sack per year player.
But in addition to being injured, Weaver had a “quiet first week of training camp with the Dolphins, sparingly making an impact on Miami’s defensive line before getting injured,” according to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
