The rookie still needs to earn the starting job for Denver but he’s impressing both his teammates and coaches.

It’s no secret that I loved the Lloyd Cushenberry III pick.
The fact the Denver Broncos were able to select the LSU center with their second third-round pick in the NFL draft still blows me away. Add that with the fact John Elway was able to get Jurrell Casey from the Tennessee Titans for a seventh-round pick and it’s been quite the mind-blowing 2020 in Denver.
A few days ago, the Broncos website did a wonderful story on the rookie center and I somehow love the pick even more.
One area that Adam Malnati and I have addressed on the MHR Radio Podcast is the potential for Cushenberry and Drew Lock to develop into a special duo. Perhaps on the level with the one Cushenberry just had with Joe Burrow.
As the story notes, in their limited interactions, Lock has impressed Cushenberry with his attitude and demeanor.
According to Cushenberry:
“Drew’s a great guy from what I’ve seen so far. He reminds me a lot of my guy Joe in college. They have that same personality, that confidence. When they walk in the room, people just gravitate to them. We’ve been around each other a little bit. So far, he’s been a great guy, a great leader. I’m sure he’s the guy to lead this team.”
Given the impact Cushenberry had on the LSU championship team in 2019, he could turn into a leader for the Broncos, too.
“It’s not just about in the meeting rooms while you’re here, it’s about late nights when you’re at home by yourself looking over your notes,” Cushenberry said. “… It’s about putting the extra work in by yourself and doing the little things to make you better on the field.”
The other reason to get excited about Cushenberry is what it does for the interior of Denver’s offensive line. The trio of Cushenberry, Dalton Risner and Graham Glasgow has the potential to be one of the best interior units in the NFL. Yes, I know there’s that drastic word again, but it’s true.
As Risner told the media on Thursday:
“Lloyd Cushenberry has been extremely impressive. You can tell that he knows his stuff. I wanted to think that I came in and I had it down really, really quick, but that guy has it down really quick. He’s getting it and he’s making sure we’ve got some snacks in the O-line room. He’s had some dip for me as well, so I really appreciate him for that (laughs). He’s doing a heck of a job and he’s got a lot of talent. It’s kind of hard right now because we don’t have helmets on. We’re kind of going through walk throughs and trying to get the plays down, so it’s kind of hard before you get padded up. I think he will be a really good player for us.”
