The Bengals got deep at cornerback this offseason. Don’t be surprised if Sims and Rose round out the group when Week 1 comes around.
More than 10% of the Bengals roster is comprised of cornerbacks, and every one of the nine that they currently roster is good enough to be on the 53-man version of it. After all the injuries they suffered at that position last year, who can blame them by packing the room with as many capable players as possible?
Two of their newest additions, LeShaun Sims and Winston Rose, don’t figure to start in front of other new names like Trae Waynes and Mackensie Alexander. But as we saw last year, depth is critical for this position.
Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo commented on Sims and Rose as guys we need to remember going forward during his press conference on Wednesday.
“...but don’t sleep on LeShaun Sims. Don’t sleep on Winston Rose. Those guys are guys that have been successful. Winston up in Canada, having all those interceptions the last couple of years. LeShaun Sims has played meaningful football in big games. They’re all big guys. They all have length to them,” Anarumo said.
Rose was one of two cornerbacks the Bengals added towards the very end of the 2019 season. He signed a two-year futures contract with the team after dominating the CFL ranks with 14 interceptions during the last two years. This isn’t his first time in the NFL, though. He originally had brief stints with the Los Angeles Rams and the Indianapolis Colts before playing up north.
A few months later, Sims was added to Cincinnati’s secondary even before Vonn Bell was. Sims’ special teams experience with the Tennessee Titans made him an ideal replacement for Tony McRae, who left for the Detroit Lions in free agency. If he’s to be active in order to play special teams, he’ll likely have to play cornerback every now and then, and Anarumo is comfortable with that.
It’s anyone’s guess right now how the rest of the cornerback group will look like. Judging by Anarumo’s words, Sims and Rose seem to have an edge on the competition.
