The New England Patriots’ wide receiver depth was bolstered on Wednesday, when the team saw three players — Julian Edelman, Devin Ross and Jeff Thomas — return to practice after having missed at least the previous session one day earlier. The team is nonetheless looking at outside options to possibly add even more bodies to the position: the Patriots had free agent wide receivers Andre Baccellia, Greg Dortch, Tony Gaiter and Matthew Sexton in town earlier today on tryouts.
WR Andre Baccellia
Andre Baccellia originally arrived in the NFL earlier this year, when the Kansas City Chiefs signed him as an undrafted free agent. The rookie failed to find a permanent spot on the world champions’ roster, however, and was released again last week. Before arriving in Kansas City, the 5-foot-10, 170-pound wide receiver spent five years at the University of Washington. He finished his college career with 107 receptions for 1,183 yards and five touchdowns.
WR Greg Dortch
The most experienced of the players brought in for a workout, Greg Dortch’s NFL career began in 2019 when the New York Jets signed him as a rookie free agent. While he failed to make the team’s 53-man roster, he did find a spot on the practice squad and was later poached by the Carolina Panthers. He went on to appear in two regular season games for the club and registered four punt returns for 28 yards as well as five kickoff returns for 119 yards. The team still decided to part ways with the 5-foot-8, 175-pound receiver in mid-December. He subsequently joined the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad, but was released by the team last month.
WR Tony Gaiter IV
Tony Gaiter is no stranger when it comes to the Patriots: his father, Tony Gaiter III, was drafted by the Patriots in 1997 and appeared in one game for the team over two separate stints. The younger Gaiter, meanwhile, has yet to sign an NFL contract after going undrafted earlier this year despite a productive career at Florida International. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound wide receiver appeared in 48 games over four seasons for the Panthers and caught 120 passes for 1,264 yards and seven touchdowns. He also has experience as a kickoff and punt returner.
WR Matthew Sexton
Like Gaiter, Matthew Sexton also has yet to sign an NFL contract after going unselected in this year’s draft. And just like the FIU product, the Eastern Michigan man is coming off a productive four-year career that saw him line up not just at wide receiver but also on kickoffs and the occasional punt return. All in all, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound receiver finished his time in Ypsilanti with 100 receptions for 1,335 yards as well as nine touchdowns.
