Yes, you should remember Cockrell. He spent 2017 with the Giants.
Multiple reports on Saturday night are indicating that the cornerback-needy New York Giants will be signing veteran cornerback Ross Cockrell. Art Stapleton of The Record had the news first.
Cockrell played for the Giants in 2017. He played in all 16 games, starting nine, and had a career-high three interceptions.
Cockrell signed a two-year free agent contract with the Carolina Panthers after leaving the Giants. He missed all of 2018 after suffering a broken left tibia and fibula during training camp. In 2019, Cockrell played in 14 games, starting 11, opposite James Bradberry. who is also now with the Giants.
The Giants are thin at cornerback with DeAndre Baker on the Commissioner’s Exempt List while facing felony charges relating to an alleged armed robbery and Sam Beal having opted out of the 2020 season.
Cockrell played 253 snaps in the slot last season and 385 as an outside cornerback, so he offers the Giants both experience and versatility.
A 2014 fourth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills, the 29-year-old has also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Cockrell has to pass COVID-19 testing protocols and a physical before any official announcement is made.
Per Albert Breer, the Giants also hosted visits from Holy Cross offensive tackle Dennis Jackson and Michigan State receiver Cody White.
