The 2020 Broncos Roster prediction 2.0

Denver Broncos v Baltimore Ravens Can Butt and Freeman make the roster? | Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images

Who will make the Denver Broncos’ final roster? Getting it down to the final cut here.

There are 18 days before kickoff against the Tennessee Titans, so it’s as good a time as any to take another stab at the final roster. While the lack of preseason games makes it a bit more of a guess as to the team’s intentions, injuries and reports out of camp paint a picture of where things stand with the individual roster battles.

Just as I did for my original roster prediction, this is a look at who will make the final 53. Where possible I’ll lay out the players I’m less certain of and more. If I believe a player has a great shot at the practice squad, I’ll mention so.

Specialists

3 make the cut

Sam Martin, Brandon McManus, Jacob Bobenheimer

Defensive Back

10 make the cut

A.J. Bouye, Bryce Callahan, De’Vante Bausby, Isaac Yiadom, Davontae Harris Michael Ojemudia, Justin Simmons, Kareem Jackson, Trey Marshall, Alijah Holder

Linebacker

5 make the cut

Todd Davis, Alexander Johnson, Josey Jewell, Justin Hollins

Edge

  • Vic Fangio said he expects Attaochu to be a big part of the team moving forward.
  • Malik Reed played first team reps when Von Miller missed time and held up.
  • Derrek Tuszka looks like a sure practice squad candidate if he can’t make the roster.

4 make the cut

Von Miller, Bradley Chubb, Jeremiah Attaochu, Malik Reed

Defensive Line

  • Jurrell Casey has impressed at camp.
  • Look for Dre’Mont Jones to make an impact in nickel sets.
  • McTelvin Agim has people excited. He’s very athletic for a man his size.
  • The last spot for this group could be up for grabs.

6 make the cut

Jurrell Casey, Shelby Harris, Mike Purcell, Dre’Mont Jones, McTelvin Agim, Christian Covington

Wide Receiver

  • Jerry Jeudy’s off to a tremendous start to his NFL career. The only complaint KOA’s Benjamin Allbright had is his returning.
  • Courtland Sutton’s easily Lock’s favorite target. Maybe too much so.
  • Tim Patrick was running with the ones before missing time to injury.
  • Between the injury and what Fangio and reports have said, practice patience with K.J. Hamler this year.
  • Look for DaeSean Hamilton to log what amounts to WR4 snaps early.
  • Diontae Spencer will make the roster as a returner.
  • I’m guessing on Cleveland, but think what he brings to special teams makes him a lock for the practice squad if nothing else.

7 make the cut

Courtland Sutton, Tim Patrick, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler, DaeSean Hamilton, Diontae Spencer, Tyrie Cleveland

Offensive Line

  • Plan at tackle is Garett Bolles and Elijah Wilkinson to start, according to Allbright. If Wilkinson can’t go or Bolles regresses, Demar Dotson would move to right tackle.
  • Lloyd Cushenberry is clearly the most talented Center candidate, but don’t rule out Austin Schlottmann yet. He’s been dependable when called upon.
  • Netane Muti has made Ryan Edward’s notes just about every day. Been an impressive run blocker. While Risner and Glasgow present an impediment to playing time inside, don’t be surprised if the rookie sees the field for some extra OL sets. Pat Shurmur runs them more than Rich Scangarello did.
  • From what I’ve seen, Calvin Anderson is practicing with the second team. With so many questions ahead of him at tackle, that bodes well for his chances to make the roster or practice squad.
  • So far it does not look like Patrick Morris will make the final roster.
  • I expect the Broncos to be active in keeping the practice squad stocked with a few extra offensive linemen.

8 make the cut

Garett Bolles, Dalton Risner, Lloyd Cushenberry, Graham Glasgow, Elijah Wilkinson, Netane Muti, Calvin Anderson, Austin Schlottmann

Tight End

  • Noah Fant and Nick Vannett will see most of the playing time.
  • Albert Okwuegbunam’s blocking has been really bad. This and some issues with routine catches could lead him to being a human highlight reel who doesn’t seem to play enough.
  • Jake Butt has played well enough to entertain to make the team so far.
  • Vic Fangio said Troy Fumagalli is “in the hunt.”
  • Andrew Beck’s past experience at fullback could help him for when Shurmur uses two back formations.

4 make the cut

Noah Fant, Nick Vannett, Albert Okwuegbunam, Jake Butt

Running backs

  • It looks like Melvin Gordon will be the starter.
  • Fangio said Freeman had “a lull” for a day or two, but has played well overall.
  • LaVante Bellamy is a likely candidate for the practice squad.
  • Jeremy Cox could push Andrew Beck off the active roster with his ability to play fullback.

3 make the cut

Melvin Gordon, Phillip Lindsay, Royce Freeman

Quarterbacks

  • Allbright told Cover 2 Broncos that Drew Lock looks like the best quarterback the Broncos have had said Peyton Manning.
  • It will be interesting to see if the Broncos elect to carry three quarterbacks this year. Pat Shurmur has done so each of the last three seasons.

3 make the cut

Drew Lock, Jeff Driskel, Brett Rypien
