Eagles Training Camp Practice Notes: Another good practice for Jalen Reagor - BGN
Jalen Reagor stood out again today. The rookie got off to a fast start — quite literally — by burning Darius Slay for a deep touchdown reception from Wentz in 1-on-1. I already mentioned Reagor caught a touchdown on a fade throw by Wentz. That wasn’t the only contested catch he made. Reagor made multiple short contested grabs with defensive backs draped all over him. Not all receivers have the strength and focus to stay with the ball in those situations. That Reagor led all 2020 first-round receivers in contested catches doesn’t come as a surprise after watching him. He plays bigger than his listed 5-11, 197 pound size. Reagor looks ready to contribute right away, which is exactly what the Eagles need from him. Oh, and I also haven’t noticed Reagor drop any punts lately. He’s progressed in that regard.

Eagles practice notes, Day 7: Duke Riley, starting linebacker? - PhillyVoice
On Monday, Riley had an impressive leaping interception of Nate Sudfeld. He also had a sack working around the edge against Jordan Mailata. His athleticism is notable on the field in practice, but a pairing of Gerry and Riley would perhaps leave the Eagles somewhat vulnerable against the run. Gerry wasn’t a great tackler last season, and there are legitimate concerns about a guy like Riley being able to stack and shed in the run game. Conversely, Edwards was a stud against the run in 2019, but there are concerns about his ability to cover running backs and tight ends because of his lack of athleticism. Perhaps the Eagles can interchange Riley and Edwards, depending on the opponent? For example, maybe Edwards plays more against a teams with high-quality rushing attacks, like the Cowboys, 49ers, Seahawks, and Ravens, while Riley might play more against pass-heavy offenses with good receiving backs, like the Saints and Cardinals?

Philadelphia Eagles (9.5): Over. The argument for the over is Carson Wentz, Doug Pederson and defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz give the Eagles a high floor. The offensive line has questions, but the defensive line could be one of the league’s best with the addition of Javon Hargrave and a healthy Malik Jackson combined with mainstays Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham. The Eagles probably need either DeSean Jackson to stay (relatively) healthy or first-round pick Jalen Reagor to have an immediate impact to be a 10-win team.

I’ll say this about the practice I saw in Philly—Doug Pederson had those guys in 11-on-11 a lot. And it was very, very competitive, which should help the team reestablish the edge it’s played with when the Eagles have been at their best. If you dig in, you’ll see that the Eagles let go of a few guys who were on scholarship, so to speak, and brought in guys like Javon Hargrave and Darius Slay, who play with a certain attitude and intensity. The kind of attitude and intensity that was pretty apparent out there.

Jones has started eight games as an Eagle and finished just four of them without getting hurt. He’s played at least 10 snaps in only 16 of 53 games since the Eagles drafted him in the second round. He finished last year healthy and made some big plays down the stretch, only to be inactive in the playoff loss to Seattle. He began this training camp No. 2 on the depth chart behind Avonte Maddox before getting hurt on the second day of full-team practice. On Monday, Jones was out at practice. Watching, once again.

T.J. Edwards is the presumed starter next to Gerry, and his grading profile — both in the collegiate ranks and in limited action as a rookie last season — suggests that it’s worth seeing what he can do as a starter. Edwards put up a 90.0-plus overall grade in each of his final two seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers, but poor testing at the NFL scouting combine resulted in a slip into undrafted territory. He worked past some of those athletic limitations as a rookie with an 83.4 PFF grade on just over 100 defensive snaps. Duke Riley should be Edwards’ primary challenger for snaps next to Gerry when the Eagles are in a nickel (or “base”) defense. It’s Riley’s second year in Philadelphia after spending the first two seasons of his NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons. Most of his action came on special teams, but he did play 200-plus snaps at linebacker in each of 2017 and 2018, earning PFF grades of 54.5 and 41.4 respectively.
Dallas Goedert says he and Zach Ertz remain tight, as speculation builds over contracts, commitments - Inquirer
Goedert said he would be happy for Ertz, if a new deal is reached, without worrying about whether there would be any money left for him. “Zach deserves a contract here, he’s been here, been a top-three tight end in the league. Personally, I believe he’s been the best in the league for the last bunch of years, so he definitely deserves whatever he’s about to get, and I’ve just got to let this year play out,” Goedert said. “It’s not even time to worry about the future. The last two years, me and Zach have been here, we’ve both played good football, we’ve been in the playoffs. I think we can do whatever we want when that time comes, but for him, excited to see what he can do.” Goedert clearly sees himself as more than a sidekick to Ertz, but that doesn’t seem to have affected their relationship.

“I do bring that energy,” said the cornerback whose nickname is Big Play Slay. “I’m very confident. I’m very, very consistent and that’s what makes me a great player, because I’ve been consistent.” Slay attributes the Eagles’ atmosphere for allowing him to showcase his abundance of swag. To him, the defensive backs have the freedom to be themselves, and they have taken full advantage so far in camp. “It’s a lot of swagger in the room,” cornerback Cre’ Von LeBlanc said Sunday. The defensive backs have forged this camaraderie in a variety of ways. It’s been things like Slay’s wife making banana pudding for the group, which received rave reviews from Robey-Coleman, to the elaborate and precise handshakes seemingly all of them have.
Saints releasing LB Nigel Bradham, per report - Canal Street Chronicles
In a bit of a surprising announcement, Adam Schefter has reported the New Orleans Saints are releasing the recently-signed Nigel Bradham. The veteran linebacker signed with the Saints back on July 30th on a one-year deal, to provide depth to the Saints linebacking corps.
Buccaneers to sign center A.Q. Shipley - Bucs Nation
A player that has been with Bruce Arians along many of his NFL stops has been center A.Q. Shipley. It appears as though Tampa Bay will soon be added to that list. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Shipley will be signing with the Buccaneers once he is able to take - and pass - a physical. [BLG Note: Former Eagles OL is still hanging on in the NFL.]

As the Cowboys’ owner and general manager, Jerry Jones has always been infatuated by the big names in the game, but in recent years, Dallas has not been swayed by veterans’ résumés. If Thomas’ former position coach in Seattle, Kris Richard, had remained with the Cowboys and Dallas employed a Seahawks-like defensive scheme, then maybe it would be an easier sell to Jones. But Seattle and Baltimore, two of the more stable franchises in the NFL, walked away from Thomas. Thomas and the Cowboys have danced apart for years, but will they finally get on the floor together? There’s a lot to consider.
Zero players tested positive for COVID-19 from Aug. 12-20 - NFL.com
The NFL provided very encouraging update to its COVID-19 testing. Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL’s chief medical officer, announced Monday that from Aug. 12-20 there were 58,397 COVID-19 tests administered, including 23,260 to players. Zero players tested positive. Only six positive cases came from the 35,137 tests to other personnel. Having zero cases for players over that period during training camp is extremely good news for the league and indicates that the protocols put in place by the NFL and NFLPA can work at negating the spread of COVID-19.

In every walk of life the world is evolving. It’s high time the broadcast industry caught up. Until networks commit to real, substantial change at a systemic level we will continue to have more “slips of the tongue,” more hollow apologies, and more people turned away from sports because they feel like it’s a pastime that isn’t for them. Everything in this world must evolve or die, and without major overhauls we will witness sports crumble, all because nobody was willing to do the hard work now to preserve the future. We can, and should demand better. Let’s get to work.
