After a 10-year career as a running back for the Eagles and Steelers, Staley turned to his second career when he became Philadelphia’s special teams quality control coach in 2011. Staley saw a promotion to running backs coach in 2013, and retained that title until 2018, when the “assistant head coach” title was added to his resume. This had a bit to do with Staley being passed over more than once when it came to a promotion to a larger role in the offense — head coach Doug Pederson wanted to make sure Staley knew how much he was valued. Taylor, the younger brother of Bengals head coach Zac Taylor, has been a highly-regarded name in NFL circles for a while now, and there’s a growing drumbeat around the league that he’s a guy to watch as a head coaching candidate in years to come. His NFL tenure started when Chip Kelly named him the Eagles’ offensive quality control coach in 2013, and he survived the transition from Kelly to Doug Pederson in 2016. Pederson promoted Taylor to passing game coordinator for the 2020 season with the thought that it’s time to see how he can run meetings and put everything together.

If training camp practice is any indication, Jordan Mailata is the current favorite to be Peters’ backup. The Australian sensation is a fun guy to root for, no doubt, but this is a dude who didn’t even play a real football game in his life until August 2018. He’s only ever played in the preseason and he’s finished his first two NFL seasons on injured reserve due to back injuries. Not to mention that Mailata hasn’t looked very good in camp this year, regularly getting wrecked by the aforementioned Ostman. It’s just hard to believe the Eagles could really count on Mailata to play meaningful snaps for an extended period of time. The only other Eagles tackle taking reps on the left side is rookie Prince Tega Wanogho. PTW has shown some signs of promise but I don’t know if the 22-year-old rookie is really ready to play a lot. He’s mostly worked with the third team in camp. PTW is a late-comer to football and seems like more of a developmental option.

Jordan Mailata – He has the potential to be the backup OT. Mailata has played both LT and RT, but looked significantly better on the left side. He’s never played OT in an NFL game and has had an up and down Training Camp. You couldn’t be confident in him on the field right now. He’s got the potential to get the job done, but it would purely be a projection. Mailata needs to get a bunch of reps in practice to show whether the light is coming on for him.

Alshon Jeffery, PFF Consensus Rank: WR74 — Calf, Ankle and foot injuries. Jeffery’s injury history is long and troubling. In 2012, he suffered a metacarpal fracture in his right hand and also tore his meniscus, missing six games in total. In 2015, he was forced to miss a total of seven games due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, an unspecified shoulder injury and a Grade 3 hamstring tear that ultimately ended his season. The veteran pass-catcher then underwent rotator cuff surgery on his right shoulder after the 2018 Super Bowl victory and missed the first three games of the following season before straining his calf, spraining his ankle and sustaining a Lisfranc injury that required surgery in 2019. Jeffery has earned the tag of being an “injury-prone” player. The Lisfranc surgery he had typically has a nine-month recovery timetable, and that timing would lead him right up to the start of the 2020 season. Therefore, it is unclear if he will be ready. Jeffery is in the twilight of his career and would be an extremely risky play in fantasy leagues.

If Jackson was looking for motivation, he could find it in the Hargrave acquisition. But there are plenty of snaps to go around, especially if defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz sticks to a three-man rotation. And if Jackson has seemed more active and animated this camp as opposed to last, it’s because he has glimpsed the other side of life without football. “You can see his excitement,” Schwartz said. “Maybe it would be a little bit different if he had played 17 games last year and went out, but he’s excited. He’s got that sort of almost a rookie excitement about being out there every day because he realized how quickly it can be taken away from you.” The player rebounding from injury who is grateful for another chance is a camp cliche, but what makes Jackson’s story interesting is that he also, aside from gaining an appreciation for what was lost, enjoyed getting a taste of his post-NFL existence.

Lauletta, 25, was drafted by the New York Giants in the fourth round of the 2018 draft out of Richmond. He was cut last year and spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2109-20. He threw five passes in a game with the Giants and did not complete any of them.

DeAndre Thompkins went undrafted out of Penn State in 2019 NFL Draft, and was initially signed by the Philadelphia Eagles. However, he was cut from the team prior to the start of the regular season. He then went on to play in the XFL for the DC Defenders. There he made his debut in Week 2, catching 6 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown before the league suspended operations in April.

Obviously winning a Super Bowl would be beyond a dream season for the 2020 Bears, but it’s fun to imagine it happening anyways. And hey, Yahoo’s 2019 simulation correctly predicted the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory, so maybe Madden knows more than we might think. Either way, one thing’s for sure — if Nick Foles puts up anything close to that incredible 4,800 yard, 44 touchdown stat line, I’ll fly to Chicago and build a statue in his likeness myself.
