Ken Flajole: ‘I really like my room’ - PE.com
According to Linebackers Coach Ken Flajole, what the Eagles see on gamedays is merely a piece of what Gerry’s true value is to the defense, which he showcases in the form of his production and his intelligence, or as Flajole likes to call it, his “high-speed internet.” No dial-up modem could handle all of the responsibilities Gerry has, especially when he is the MIKE linebacker, the de-facto quarterback of the defense. “If you had the privilege of being in our meeting rooms, you would find out that Nate is really one of the smartest football players in terms of being able to think ahead of the problems, being able to manage all of the things that we ask the MIKE linebacker to manage,” Flajole recently told reporters about Gerry. “He’s got really a good football mind, so that’s always been impressive to me.” Flajole even gave examples of how good Gerry is. He recalled one day recently in Training Camp where the Eagles were participating in a third-and-long drill in where Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz put an extra emphasis on man-to-man coverage. According to Flajole, Gerry seamlessly changed his technique multiple times during the drill, depending on the down and distance, which is apparently much easier said than done

No one wants to hear “I told ya so.” You don’t want to be the person saying that. And yet, here I am, telling you that I was right about there being no real competition for the starting cornerback spot across from Darius Slay. Such a notion was always farcical. Avonte Maddox has been the only guy taking reps there. And he’s looked good, too. He’s not perfect, no. There are obviously going to be times when his diminutive size works against him. But Maddox’s coverage in camp has been very sticky and he’s made some plays on the ball. He’s the best starting option at CB2.

Hard to believe Sidney Jones is hurt again. We don’t know what the injury is, all the Eagles will tell us is that it’s “lower body,” and that’s been the recurring issue with Sidney since he got here. He needs to get back quickly. Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, Cre’Von LeBlanc and Nickell Robey-Coleman are locks for four roster spots, leaving Jones and Douglas competing for what will likely be the final spot. I really thought Sidney would challenge Maddox for CB2, but a week into camp Maddox is getting all the reps and Sidney hasn’t practiced since Tuesday. I’m starting to think his roster spot might be in jeopardy.

It’s going to be a little bit more difficult next year for Howie [Roseman]. But I still don’t think they’re in serious cap trouble. I could show you on paper where pushing some money forward this year and then restructuring a couple of deals and maybe moving on from an older player like Brandon Graham, and once again they’d be in good shape and still be able to make a [free-agent] move or two next year. There will be a little bit more pain. There will be a few more challenging decisions, including how much restructuring do they want to do, which is basically borrowing from the future. They’ve got guys like [Fletcher] Cox and [Carson] Wentz that they could do that with. They could go back to [Lane] Johnson again. So it’s easy to do that if they want to keep borrowing from their future. So they don’t really have a short-term problem. But they do have to make a few more adjustments to accommodate what’s on paper than they have had to do in past years.

The Eagles could use depth behind 2019 rookie sensation Miles Sanders, and Devonta Freeman could use a roster spot to replenish his market value. Doug Pederson’s offense would offer the two-time Pro Bowler a soft landing spot to try and recapture his dual-threat skill set that has been limited by injuries and inefficiencies over the past three seasons. The former Falcon says he’s looking for a team that’s hungry and believes in him as much as he believes in himself, which suggests he’d be open to competing if it’s the right situation. Sanders, who’s week-to-week with a lower body injury, has the Eagles’ RB1 job locked up, but Freeman could potentially earn snaps away from backups Boston Scott and Corey Clement. Best case: A healthy Freeman makes the most of seven-to-10 touches per game, providing the Eagles with productivity from the backfield while Sanders catches his breath. Worst case: The Eagles waste a few million dollars (they have the cap space) on a short-term, low-cost move.

Rumor: Frustration mounting between Ravens and Earl Thomas III - Baltimore Beatdown
Yesterday, it was reported there was a fight between Earl Thomas III and Chuck Clark during practice. So much so that several players and eventually head coach John Harbaugh had to separate the two. Once the dispute ended, Clark left the field. Most times, training camp arguments and skirmishes happen and it’s nothing. It’s incredibly hot, humid and they’re some of the most competitive people on the planet. Frustrations hit a boiling point, then cool off. Hell, Ryan Jensen and Za’Darius Smith were a near-annual bout in camp during their respective tenures. But according to reports, this may be something greater. [BLG Note: This is gonna end with Thomas going to the Cowboys, isn’t it?]

Another part of this that is perplexing is - what are the Cowboys up to? They still had $6 million in cap space, and they have all their rookies signed. That should be enough money to allow them the flexibility to sign players here and there as the need arises. That is unless, they go after a bigger fish. Every year, there always seems to be a disgruntled defensive back stuck on a team that is going nowhere. Teams are willing to let these young, high upside players go in return for some draft capital. Or maybe there’s a veteran defensive tackle out there that would be more valuable to the Cowboys than they are to their current team? The Cleveland Browns have a couple players in Sheldon Richardson and Denzel Ward who would be a welcomed addition to this Cowboys defense should the when the wheels come off of their season.
