And it shows how much he wanted out of Jacksonville
Part of the issue with the Minnesota Vikings swinging their big trade for former Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive end Yannick Ngakoue was how to make things work with the salary cap. Under his one-year franchise tender, Ngakoue was set to make a shade under $18 million for the 2020 season, and the Vikings don’t have that much cap space available.
However, according to Close, Personal Friend of the Daily Norseman Tom Pelissero™, the Vikings and Ngakoue have come to a new arrangement. . .and if you’re wondering just how much Ngakoue apparently wanted out of Jacksonville, you’ll get your answer here.
Ngakoue's franchise tender, which he never signed in Jacksonville, was worth $17.788 million. And that was in a state with no personal income tax. So the fee will end up being upwards of $6M for what Ngakoue wanted: a fresh start, in Minnesota.

For this season, Ngakoue will make $12 million, which is nearly $6 million less than he was set to make. And, as Pelissero points out, he’s going from a state that has no state income tax in Florida to a state with a tax rate of just under 10% for someone making the sort of money Ngakoue will be making. Ngakoue did say that he would never play for the Jaguars again, and by giving up a whole lot of money, it shows that he was pretty serious about that declaration.
Just as importantly, the agreement the two teams have come to does not have a “no tag” clause, meaning that if the Vikings and Ngakoue can’t come to a long-term arrangement, the team can franchise tag him in 2021. Because the franchise deadline passed without Ngakoue signing his franchise tender, the two sides can’t work anything out until next March at the earliest.
That presents a potentially interesting situation for the Vikings. They haven’t worked anything out with running back Dalvin Cook as far as a long-term deal, and safety Anthony Harris is playing this year under his franchise tender as well. Given the potential dynamics of the salary cap likely going down for the 2021 season and several key pieces potentially hitting the free agent market, there could be some interesting decisions on the horizon for the Vikings for the 2021 season.
But we can worry about that then. For now, this is still a pretty big deal.
