Falcoholinks: All the Falcons news you need for Monday, Sept. 7

NFL: Pro Football Hall of Fame Game-Atlanta Falcons vs Denver Broncos Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Countdown To Sunday LINKS

You’ve made it, Falcoholics. There is NFL football this Sunday, specifically of the Atlanta Falcons variety. It will be a different season, but it’s a season nonetheless — and we can’t wait to go along for the ride with you. Lots of training camp content and roster reviews in today’s edition of Falcoholinks.

The roster is set

The cuts came swiftly on Saturday as the Falcons trimmed down their camp roster to round out the final 53. There were a couple of surprises — mainly the cut of backup quarterback Kurt Benkert and the release of promising returner Chris Rowland, but all things considered the roster shook out similarly to our staff’s predictions.

There was, however, some good news on the surprise cuts yesterday.

Roster analysis

The Atlanta Falcons have found the 53 men they will enter the upcoming season with, so how does each positional group look? The Falcons are obviously loaded at wide receiver, but as with any NFL team, there are some weak spots on the roster.

Practice squad tracker

After releasing quarterback Kurt Benkert, we were pleased to see him re-signed to the Falcons practice squad. The Falcons will indeed carry two quarterbacks on the practice squad, and we’ve been tracking the other players who will be joining them.

Laquon Treadwell released

It wasn’t entirely shocking given his reportedly lackluster camp performance, but Laquon Treadwell was one of the bigger-name Falcons who did not make the 53-man roster. The former first-rounder will look to establish himself elsewhere.

John Wetzel released, OT Timon Parris signed

It happened again. The Falcons released John Wetzel for the nth time, but he’s landed on Atlanta’s practice squad. They have also brought in offensive tackle Timon Parris.

No UDFAs to active roster

For the first time in the Dan Quinn era, no undrafted free agents have cracked the active roster. Olamide Zaccheaus made the final 53 in 2019, and the year before saw the additions of offensive tackle Matt Gono, defensive tackle Justin Zimmer, and linebacker Richard Jarvis.
