For Broncos fans, cutdown day not the usual spectacle

With no preseason games, many of those cut were just names.

...and there you have it. The Denver Broncos now have their 53-man roster and 16-man practice squad set.

What is usually an emotional day of cut veterans and what feels like young talent jettisoned too soon, was not that this year. With no preseason games to watch, our impressions of the cut players were limited to cursory press reports and jittery video from the Broncos camp feed. Without fans at training camp, those familiar support groups for various players who flashed in camp never seemed to take seed. So when the cuts came down, to many fans it felt like a recitation of random names pulled from a phonebook.

That’s not to say that shaping the 2020 roster wasn’t without surprises. Very few of us could have guessed that Isaac Yiadom would be traded to the Giants or that Todd Davis and Troy Fumagalli would be cut, but those moves occurred in the days preceding official cutdown day.

If I had to point to one move that surprised me, it would have to be that corner De’Vante Bausby didn’t make the 53-man roster. Most Broncos fans genuinely liked what they saw out of him last year before getting hurt. Heck, he’s got a great story having excelled in the now-defunct AAF before signing with the Broncos. It was a relief to see that Denver brought him back on their practice squad. So the one outrage cut of the day was quickly and rightfully quashed within hours.

Like the offseason, training camp, and everything else in 2020, cutdown day was different. For better or worse, it was what it was and now, finally, we can look forward to real football this week. Unfortunately, Broncos fans will have to wait until next week to get their first real football fix of the season.

...but that’s 2020 for you.
