WR Derrick Dillon removed, at least for now

The New York Giants added two players to their practice squad on Tuesday evening, signing defensive back Ryan Lewis and veteran running back Rod Smith.

The Giants terminated the practice squad contract of undrafted rookie wide receiver. Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, though, tweeted that “Dillon is a new father. Joe Judge told Dillon to spend the week with his new baby. He is expected to re-sign to the practice squad next week.”

The moves bring the Giants’ practice squad to the 2020 limit of 16 players.

Lewis played seven games for the Buffalo Bills in 2018. He played in 13 games for three teams — the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles — last season.

Lewis’s longest stretch with one team last season was eight games in Miami, three of which he started, while playing for current Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

Lewis is a 6-foot, 185-pound former undrafted free agent out of Pitt.

Lewis was with the Washington Football Team during training camp, but was waived on Saturday.

Smith is a 28-year-old who played for Jason Garrett with the Dallas Cowboys for 3½ seasons, from the middle of the 2015 season through the 2018 season.

Smith, you might recall, was with the Giants during training camp last season, but was placed on injured reserve and then released from IR with an injury settlement. He ended up appearing in six games last season, three with the Tennessee Titans and three with the Oakland Raiders, but did not have a carry or reception.

Smith, 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, has experience as both a running back and fullback. He also, obviously, is familiar with Garrett’s offense.
