Thursday Night Football, Week 8. Tonight the Carolina Panthers host the Atlanta Falcons in a matchup of NFC South also rans.
The 3-4 Panthers come into this game looking to break a two game losing streak. The Panthers’ record may be a bit deceptive. They have had a brutal schedule. The Panthers’ four losses have come against teams with a combined record of 17-9, and the Panthers have faced just two losing teams all year. The surprising Panthers boast one of the league’s better passing attacks. Old friends Teddy Bridgewater and Robby Anderson have teamed up with D.J. Moore to put together the NFL’s 11th ranked passing game, 6th in net yards per attempt.
The 1-6 Falcons come into this game off a devastating loss against the Detroit Lions. All the Falcons had to do to seal a win was NOT score a touchdown, then kick a field goal at point blank range as time ran out against a Lions team with no timeouts left. Instead Todd Gurley scored a touchdown on first down with more than a minute left on the clock, just long enough for the Lions to storm down the field and score the winning touchdown. Absolutely brutal. The Falcons have found multiple brutal ways to lose football games this year. Despite sporting a prolific passing attack ranked 3rd in the NFL, the Falcons can’t get out of their own way, largely due to a 31st ranked defense that can’t stop anybody. The Falcons have four losses by a touchdown or less this year, including a 23 - 16 loss to the Panthers less than three weeks ago.
