Tyrone Crawford On Schedule In Rehab Process - David Helman, dallascowboys.com
Some positive news about a big part of the Dallas’ defensive line.
It’s a stark change for such a vocal leader, but Tyrone Crawford has mostly been seen and not heard on the practice fields this year. That’s probably because Crawford isn’t practicing yet, as he continues to rehab his way through a hip injury.
“Rehab is going good, just been getting my hip right,” Crawford said Wednesday. “I have a gluteus medius problem, but I’m fixing that up and just getting right. Getting ready to get back, explosive, powerful, ready to go.”
Without seeing him play a single snap of football, Crawford definitely looks more powerful. The veteran pass rusher reconditioned his body to play defensive end two years ago. But even still, Crawford reported to training camp this summer looking – well, bigger. That’s a fact he attributed to being more available to work with strength and conditioning coach Mike Woicik.

Prescott isn’t yet an MVP caliber quarterback. He’s a good one, who wins games. In his three seasons as a Cowboy, he’s taken the team to the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs twice. The one year in which he hasn’t, he went 9-7. His regular-season record as a starter stands at 32-16.
We know he wins, but can anybody do that behind the Cowboys offensive line? Nope. Simply ask Kellen Moore. Factoring in the NFL’s spiked worth for a quarterback, Prescott’s age (26), winning record, the simple need to sign him, and the deals handed out to Carson Wentz ($32 million APY [average per year]) and Russell Wilson ($35 million APY), Prescott’s contract should hover around $32-$35 million per year.

Some notes from the Mothership on the last practice in Oxnard.
Speaking of two-minute, it has to be considered a win for the defense. They gave the offense fits at every, single level. It started off with Dak Prescott rolling out to his right and firing and interception to Xavier Woods – only for the play to be called dead by an offsides flag. On the very next snap, he looked for Michael Gallup on a comeback, but Chido Awuzie undercut the route and picked it off. On the next possession, Prescott did guide the offense down to the 2-yard line and score a touchdown on a quarterback keeper. However, the offense went for a two-point conversion and the “win,” but Prescott couldn’t connect with his receiver on a slant route, resulting in another win for the defense.
Devin Smith continues to show up since his nice outing against the 49ers. He had multiple nice catches during Wednesday’s practice – one in 1v1 drills and several during full team. Smith’s ability to re-position himself to haul in catches at different angles has been impressive.

The second-year defensive end has caught the eye of Jerry Jones.
Thus far through training camp, it looks like the Cowboys will be relying on Dorance Armstrong to come up big. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones spoke to the media this week about which young players have caught his eye this Summer, and he immediately jumped to naming Dorance Armstrong.
“I’ve liked Armstrong...I think he’s absolutely … the trick is as a young player to get as much out of every day, every rep you can. He’s really impressed me”
While it may not read like Jerry is singing Armstrong’s praises from the heavens, even the fact that he named him at all speaks to how big Armstrong has come up during camp. He’s putting himself in important conversations around the organization, and is helping the team’s decision makers to feel very comfortable with allowing him to play (and potentially start) week one.

Former coach Mike Martz visited the Cowboys at camp and gave his assessment of the team.
The 68-year old Martz is effusive in his praise for both [Kellen Moore and Dak Prescott].
Let’s start with Moore, who spent six years as an NFL backup and one year as a quarterback coach before ascending to the coordinator’s role for a head coach in a make or break year.
”The thing that took me back was how bright he is,’’ Martz said. “He’s extremely bright, and not just the Xs and Os. He has an understanding of the game and defenses that, for his age, I’m kinda jealous of. I wish I was like that at his age.
”I understand why he’s in that position. It’s easy to see.’’
Martz on Prescott:
“He’s special,’’ Martz said. “Special. Not just special in terms of ability. He has a football acumen that is truly exceptional. A terrific leader.
”Being around him, I just think he’s one of those elite guys who comes along only every so once in a while. I’ve been fortunate enough to be around some really good players. It’s pretty easy to recognize when someone stands out like that.’’

The Cowboys know that they can take as many sacks this year as they did last year. Shoring up the offensive line will help, but Dak Prescott plans to aid the cause, too.
Factors that must be addressed in this camp: Travis Frederick’s return at center should help with recognition and coordination along the line, but the receivers must do a better job of getting open -- scheme can help here -- and Prescott must get rid of the ball quicker in certain situations.
”Simply knowing what my check down is and getting it out of my hand whether it’s completed or not,’’ Prescott said. “Not taking those negative yards.
”You look at the good teams. You look at the teams that are in the Super Bowl. Those are teams that don’t have many negative plays. So I start with myself of getting the ball out, knowing what I need to do with it. But then again, sometimes I’m able to make plays by keeping the ball in my hand and extending plays.
”It’s a fine line. You just have to find that line and ride it the best you can.’’

Mickey sums up the injury situation as the Cowboys close out the Oxnard portion of training camp.
Walking Wounded: The injuries began piling up this week following Saturday’s preseason opener against San Francisco. By the completion of Tuesday’s practice, 21 players were being held out of practice with injuries, another two on vet days off and, of course, Zeke still MIA. But of all the injuries, with four guys still on PUP (DeMarcus Lawrence, Tyrone Crawford, Byron Jones, Noah Brown), the most troubling one might be the back issue Pro Bowl guard Zack Martin is dealing with. I’m told Martin’s problematic disc is improving, but the key thing will be staying “deliberate” by not returning him to practice or games too soon. Then, there is Robert Quinn (hand surgery), Luke Gifford (high ankle sprain) and Connor McGovern (strained pec) likely missing the remainder of training camp. Good news is, though, the Cowboys should be getting a few of these guys back after returning home, specifically Amari Cooper, Crawford and Brown. Jones still is eyeing the season opener, and Sean Lee and Lawrence might remain in bubble wrap until meeting the Giants on Sept. 8.
