Jermaine Kearse carted off after horrible injury in Lions debut

Jermaine Kearse’s 2019 season is almost certainly over after just a handful of preseason snaps.

The Washington native and former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver made his Detroit Lions debut on Thursday against the New England Patriots, but his night would end with an air cast around his left leg.

Kearse was run blocking for running back Toby Johnson on the fifth play of the game when Patriots safety Terrence Brooks, in an effort to make a tackle, missed Johnson and barreled into Kearse’s legs. His left leg noticeably bent in a way that legs aren’t supposed to bend, and Jermaine immediately grabbed it in pain.

As the crowd in Detroit fell silent, Kearse was carted off the field, as fellow ex-Seahawks teammate and current Patriots DE Michael Bennett was among those who gave him support before he departed for the locker room.

There is video of the injury that you can watch here, although I wouldn’t recommend it.

This is clearly devastating news and sad to see. Kearse was known for his durability, missing only four games from 2013-2018 between his time in Seattle and with the New York Jets. Unfortunately, there’s a strong chance that the man who caught Seattle’s go-ahead/game-winning touchdown passes the 2013 and 2014 NFC Championship games will not be able to play again until the 2020 season.
