Packers linebacker Oren Burks leaves preseason opener with injury

NFL: Tennessee Titans at Green Bay Packers Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Green Bay got their first injury of the game midway through the first quarter.

It only took a few minutes of game time for the Green Bay Packers to suffer their first injury of the 2019 preseason. After a flag-filled first series on offense, the Packers punted the football away to the Houston Texans, who were moving the ball thanks to a defensive penalty on cornerback Tony Brown.

On a first and ten, however, the Packers got pressure on Texans quarterback Joe Webb. With defensive lineman Montravius Adams collapsing the pocket on the interior, inside linebacker Oren Burks was blitzing and was blocked onto the ground. Outside linebacker Reggie Gilbert brought Webb down for a sack, but Burks remained on his back on the turf after the play for some time, seemingly holding his arm or shoulder.

Burks, the team’s third-round draft pick in 2018, started the game next to rookie Ty Summers. He was injured during the second preseason game a year ago, seemingly sapping his early development and causing him to have a minimal role on defense. Hopefully this injury does not cost Burks the remainder of this game or any further action.

UPDATE: Burks came out of the injury tent with his left shoulder wrapped up and his day appears to be done.
