A better performance from the purple than they had in the opener
In a contest against a playoff team from last season, the Minnesota Vikings had a solid, if unspectacular, performance from their starters, and some of their depth players were able to put together a victory.
The Vikings defeated the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night at U.S. Bank Stadium by a final score of 25-19.
Both teams played their starters for a little over a quarter, and both teams managed to pick up a field goal during that time. Dan Bailey connected on a 24-yard attempt for the Vikings late in the first quarter to give them a 3-0 lead, and Jason Myers answered with one for Seattle in the second quarter to make it 3-3.
The first touchdown of the game was provided by the defense. . .and, unfortunately for the Vikings, it was the Seahawks’ defense. Sean Mannion missed a route to Chad Beebe (that Beebe may or may not have cut short), and Seattle defensive back DeShawn Shead picked it off and took it back 88 yards for a Seahawks’ touchdown to give the visitors a 10-3 lead.

Minnesota answered just before the end of the first half, as Mannion atoned for the pick-six with a Vikings’ touchdown. After a big 45-yard catch-and-run by Mike Boone, Mannion found Irv Smith Jr. for a 3-yard touchdown pass just before halftime to tie the score at 10-10.

Seattle took the lead back about midway through the second quarter, with Myers connecting on a 52-yard field goal (set up by a long pass interference penalty on Holton Hill) to make the score 13-10. The Vikings answered with another touchdown, as Kyle Sloter found Brandon Zylstra in the end zone for a 4-yard score! Kaare Vedvik came on for the extra point (after Dan Bailey handled the first extra point and a field goal attempt) and connected to make the lead 17-13.
The Seahawks got another field goal from Myers early in the fourth quarter, a 24-yarder to make the score 17-16. Following that possession, Sloter took the Vikings down the field again, putting together another nice drive that was capped by a 1-yard run by Khari Blasingame. The Vikings went for the two-point conversion, and Mike Boone pushed the ball across the goal line to make it 25-16 with just over five minutes left in the contest. Myers connected on another field goal, a 20-yarder, to make it 25-19 with a little over three minutes remaining. The Vikings were able to run out the clock, and walked away with their second preseason victory.
Kirk Cousins had a decent enough night for the first team offense, finishing his night 6-of-8 for 68 yards. He also managed another 45 yards on a long pass to Adam Thielen that drew a pass interference call to set up the Vikings’ first field goal. Thielen caught three passes for 45 yards on the night. Alexander Mattison, starting again at running back with Dalvin Cook sitting out, had 41 yards rushing on ten carries, including a nice 22-yard burst in the second quarter.
The Vikings move to 2-0 on the preseason, and will stay at U.S. Bank Stadium for their next preseason contest, which will be on Saturday afternoon against the Arizona Cardinals. The Seahawks drop to 1-1 on the preseason, and will take on the Los Angeles Chargers in Southern California on Saturday night.
