Ben Ludeman-USA TODAY Sports
The Seattle Seahawks’ first road game of the 2019 NFL preseason was not particularly impressive, as the offense failed to get into the end zone and the defense repeatedly couldn’t get third down stops. It was a 25-19 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in a game that was reasonably good to watch in the first quarter and nosedived into something truly awful, even by preseason standards.
Both first-team(ish) offenses drove into enemy territory, only to stall out and punt on their respective opening possessions. The Vikings got on the board first with a field goal, as Kirk Cousins found Adam Thielen on a deep pass over Shaquill Griffin, then Thielen drew a DPI call on Tre Flowers to set up 1st and goal. Seattle was unlucky on this drive, as Poona Ford forced a fumble on RB Alexander Mattison, but the refs ruled it down by contract. Russell Wilson (6/9 for 82 yards) led the Seahawks to a short field goal, as he hit Jaron Brown for a 33-yard gain deep into Viking territory.
Sean Mannion entered the game for the Vikings and threw a touchdown pass... to DeShawn Shead. Credit Cassius Marsh and Barkevious Mingo for the pressures to make it a 10-3 Seahawks lead.

Mannion did bounce back thanks to a 45-yard pass to Mike Boone, as he beat Jacob Martin on a blitz and then broke a Shead tackle. Irv Smith Jr scored from three yards out, as another blitz backfired and literally no one even attempted to cover the rookie TE.

The Seahawks regained the lead in the 2nd half on a Jason Myers field goal, with Terry Wright drawing a pass interference penalty. Minnesota’s third-string QB Kyle Sloter embarked on an 11-play, 73-yard drive that ended in a Brandon Zylstra touchdown to make it 17-13 Vikings.

This crazy-ass catch-and-fumble by Jazz Ferguson somehow didn’t lead to a turnover. Instead, Jackson Harris recovered it even further into Vikings territory, resulting in another Myers field goal.

Kyle Sloter, who apparently is a preseason god, picked apart the Seahawks third-string secondary and Akeem King in particular, as Laquon Treadwell had his way with King. A 1-yard plunge by fullback Khari Blasingame, followed by a two-point conversion by Mike Boone made it 25-16 Vikings late in the 4th quarter.
Trying to lead a comeback, Paxton Lynch was knocked out of the game after a massive illegal helmet shot by Holton Hill on a read-option keeper. Lynch was sliding down, Hill whacked him and Lynch’s head snapped backward in a bad way. Hill was ejected for such an awful hit, as Lynch walked off the field under his own power. JT Barrett replaced him and the Seahawks closed the deficit to 25-19 on another Myers field goal.
Seattle thankfully failed to get a defensive stop so the offense didn’t get the ball back until :09 left. Obviously, they lost. Nobody else got hurt, so that was a plus.
Just to note, the Seahawks opted to sit Bobby Wagner, K.J. Wright, D.K. Metcalf, and Shaquem Griffin (among others).
