When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Matt Gay with their fifth round selection in the 2019 NFL draft, it came as a bit of a surprise.
Many people expected the Buccaneers to roll with Cairo Santos for the season and possibly bring in another veteran for training camp. Instead, Jason Licht drafted his second kicker in three seasons, but so far, this selection seems to be turning out a lot better.
Gay is already off to a better start than former second round pick Roberto Aguayo. If you remember correctly, Aguayo missed his first ever field goal attempt with Tampa Bay, while Gay connected on a 55 yard field goal to kick off his career (no pun intended).
The kick was not only a confidence booster for the rookie, but it was also the longest field goal ever made in Heinz Field history.
The Buccaneers fan base is really rallying around Gay, hoping that he is the answer the team has been looking for ever since the release of Matt Bryant, which feels like decades ago.
However, Santos isn’t making the decision easy for the team. He has also been very impressive this training camp, but unless Gay misses multiple kicks and somehow loses strength on his leg over the next three weeks, it’s hard to see Santos beating him out.
At this point, it’s probably Gay’s job to lose
