If the Cowboys want to, they should be able to interview Lincoln Riley soon.
It feels likely heading in to Week 17 that the Dallas Cowboys will be looking for a new head coach this coming offseason. The list of potential candidates feels both long and short. There are a lot of names to consider and there are certainly favorites. One person who has been connected to the Cowboys for quite some time is someone who coaches not too far north of AT&T Stadium, Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley.
In the least surprising sports result of the weekend, Riley’s Sooners were bounced in the College Football Playoff by LSU and Heisman Trophy Joe Burrow. While Sooner fans everywhere are likely upset, the reality here is that Riley’s season is over. That means that if he were needed for a meeting, say a potential coaching interview, in the near future that he could participate in it.
It’s worth noting that Riley will likely be someone that any team with a coaching vacancy considers. He’s accomplished quite a bit during his brief time in Norman, he’s produced two Heisman winners of his own plus three straight playoff appearances (although he has yet to taste the title game).
If there are indeed other teams interested in Riley, they could theoretically get a chance to interview him - and therefore lock him up - before the Cowboys do if the Cowboys clinch the NFC East on Sunday (meaning they win and the Eagles lose). There is a lot hanging in the balance right now and the next day is going to decide a lot.
Whatever comes, Lincoln Riley could be part of it. That’s an exciting future to consider and it’s one that might not be so far away from us after all.
