Former NFL wide receiver Reche Caldwell, who spent a total of seven years in the league and also was a member of the New England Patriots at one point, was shot and killed in his hometown of Tampa on Saturday night as was since confirmed by authorities. Caldwell was just 41 years old at the time of his death.

In the aftermath of the murder, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick released a short statement via the team:

I am saddened to hear the news about Reche. He is remembered for his solid contributions to our team. My thoughts and prayers are with Reche’s family.

Caldwell arrived in New England, where he produced the best season of his career, in 2006. The Patriots’ leading receiver that year, he caught 61 passes for 760 yards and four touchdowns during the regular season and added 16 more catches for 176 yards and another score in the playoffs. However, the team parted ways with him shortly before the 2007 regular season opener.

Caldwell also spent time with the San Diego Chargers, who originally drafted him in the second round back in 2002 as well as the Washington Redskins and St. Louis Rams.
