A Broncos season without preseason is weird

Okay, maybe we were a bit harsh.

Last year, the Denver Broncos enjoyed no fewer than 5 preseason games. In 2020, Denver will play in exactly zero.

Usually, by this time in the preseason, most NFL fans are already bemoaning the lackluster vanilla play by a bunch of guys who ultimately will never come closer than this mere sniff actually playing in the NFL. It’s an understood song and dance that has gone on my whole life, they play non-competitive football with scrubs, we watch and complain. Hey, at least it’s better than the Pro Bowl!

However, now that football is gone this preseason, my complaints now shift to missing it. Granted, I still believe that 4 and even 5 preseason games are unnecessary, but it’s becoming clear that no preseason games isn’t the answer either.

This deep into August, Broncos fans would have already had two games, one against San Francisco and another against the Bears, to have watched. I miss it. The hokey local announcers, the long winded interviews in the booth with Broncos brass, even the amateurish technical glitches that remind you that everyone, team included, needs these games to hone their skills before the regular season.

It is going to be so strange not seeing the Broncos suited up before their first game against the Tennessee Titans on September 14th. It’s likely going to be weird for the players themselves. To take the stage without even the most basic of rehearsals will certainly have an affect on games early in the season. Whether that affect is injury or rust or a combination of the two remains to be seen.

The preseason isn’t perfect, but it’s an ingrained part of the start of football. Not only do I miss it, I miss being annoyed by it. September 14th can’t get here fast enough.
