Falcons-centric links for a Monday.
Training camp is chugging along, and some battles have emerged that warrant some attention. That topic and more in Monday’s edition of Falcoholinks.
Player profiles
The 2020 NFL season is drawing nearer, which is wild to think about. August has been a great month so far for the Falcons, and soon it will be in the rearview as Atlanta prepares for its tilt against the Seattle Seahawks on September 13th. With that context in mind, we’re rounding out our offseason ‘Player profiles’ series.
Linebacker LaRoy Reynolds is again in the mix, and while he was expected to contribute regularly on special teams, the additions of Mykal Walker and Deone Bucannon means his roster spot is in jeopardy.
Edmond Robinson may be Reynolds’ main competition, as his size and athleticism check boxes that the Falcons are thin on in the linebacker room.
Deadrin Senat’s role on the Falcons is as confusing to us as it likely is to you. He’s inactive most weeks, and has not really been provided the opportunity to establish himself at defensive tackle.
John Cominsky, on the other hand, has shown flashes of being a useful rotational defender along the line. He will be given the opportunity to rush the quarterback in passing situations, and should receive some reps on the edge, too.
Wake up call
It was somewhat of a surprise when the Falcons elected to not pick up Takkarist McKinley’s fifth-year option, and McKinley is using it as motivation to perform in 2020. Citing it as a “wake up call,” he showed up to camp in great shape and excited to showcase his abilities this season.
Heating up
We’re in the thick of training camp, and some intriguing camp battles are beginning to emerge. Falcoholic EIC Dave Choate broke down the top battles as players vie for a spot on the roster.
Breakout candidates
So who is primed to breakout for the Falcons in 2020? There are certainly a number of players in Atlanta who possess the skill and potential to make their mark in the upcoming season.
Additions/Subtractions
The Falcons made a couple of moves in recent days, by waiving UDFA offensive lineman Scottie Dill and adding offensive lineman Ka’John Armstrong for depth along the line.
