How have the Jets changed this offseason?
Every year, the NFL blogs of SB Nation share intel on their teams with the other blogs heading into the season for our 2020 NFL season preview. This year is no different in that regard, but the circumstances around the season are different.
In today’s installment, we take a look at the New York Jets with some help from Gang Green Nation.

Rookie I’m most excited about: Mekhi Becton is the first offensive lineman selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Jets since 2006. That year the team picked D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold with its two first round picks. Both were high end starters for a decade. The Jets can only hope Becton turns out as good. He was regularly dominant in college at Louisville. While his game needs some technical refinement, he has all of the necessary tools to grow into a dominant tackle.
Best position battle heading into training camp: The Jets will likely start Pierre Desir at one outside corner spot and Brian Poole in the slot. The other outside corner spot is totally up in the air. There are no proven players. Competitors include Bless Austin (who played well in stretches late last season, Arthur Maulet, Nate Hairston, Quincy Wilson, and fifth round pick Bryce Hall.
Biggest storyline heading into training camp: The Jets have numerous high profile storylines from the development of third year quarterback Sam Darnold to the tenuous position of head coach Adam Gase. At this point the story generating the most headlines, however, is the status of Jamal Adams. The All Pro safety was adamant early in the offseason about demanding a new contract. He then publicly demanded a trade when there wasn’t enough progress. The Jets have shown little inclination to either give Adams the deal he wants or to trade him so this will likely remain a major story heading into the season.
Under-the-radar storyline heading into training camp: The Jets have a revamped offensive line. In addition to drafting Becton, the Jets re-signed Alex Lewis, and signed George Fant, Greg Van Roten, and Connor McGovern in free agency. The offensive line was the biggest weakness on the team a year ago. That was partially due to injuries. It was partially due to the team signing Ryan Kalil in training camp too late for Kalil to get into shape and learn the offense by the start of the season. Mainly, though, it was just because they players weren’t very good. It had a clear impact on Darnold’s development. The Jets need their new players to gel quickly.
Notable injuries heading into training camp: Avery Williamson missed the entire 2019 season with a knee injury. The Jets signed veteran Joe Flacco to serve as Darnold’s backup, but he does not expect to be ready for Week 1 as he recovers from a back injury.
